Locris (FR)

May 18, 1964 – 1984

Venture VII (GB) x Ormara (FR), by Djebel (FR)

Family 14

Locris owed his existence to one of Marcel Boussac’s experiments with inbreeding, as his dam Ormara was inbred 2x2 to Tourbillon. Although a full sister to two-time French champion Coronation V, she never raced, but where Coronation V was barren, Ormara proved a good broodmare. Locris, the result of an outcross mating, possessed talent above the ordinary, but although he won two important events during his career, he was one of those frustrating horses who always seemed to find one too good for him in a big race. His spotty record resulted in his being sent to Brazil for stallion duty rather than remaining in Europe—fortunately for the Brazilians, as Locris became a three-time champion sire in his adoptive country and was an important sire of broodmares as well. Unfortunately, none of his sons were able to succeed him as sires, effectively ending the Relic branch of the Man o' War male line in South America.

As an individual

An elegant bay horse with good rein length, a smoothly made body, and well-made hindquarters and hind legs, Locris could be faulted for a rather long back and being light on bone below the knee, faults common in the progeny of Tourbillon.

As a stallion

According to the reference work Great Thoroughbred Sires of the World, Locris sired 30 stakes winners. The American Produce Records (Bloodstock Research Information Systems) credit Locris with 33 winners and 30 stakes winners from 132 named foals of racing age; these statistics are almost certainly incomplete.

Sire rankings

Per Great Thoroughbred Sires of the World (2006, Churchill, Reichard, and Rogers):
  • Led the Brazilian general sire list in 1977, 1983, and 1987/1988; 2nd in 1978 and 1982; 3rd in 1981 and 1986.
  • 2nd on the Brazilian broodmare sire list in 1995/96.

Locris was bred and owned by Marcel Boussac. In 1971, he was exported to Brazil, where he was owned by Agro Pecuaria Inshalla Ltda. Locris died in 1984.

Pedigree notes

Sired by the high-class miler Venture VII (by Relic), Locris is outcrossed through five generations. He is a half brother to Iroma (by Iron Liege), dam of Group 2-placed French stakes winner Irodos (by Abdos) and Group 3-placed French stakes winner Imyar (by Labus; also a stakes winner over hurdles) and second dam of 1990 Gran Premio del Jockey Club e Coppa d’Oro (ITY-G1) winner Erdelistan and French Group 3 winner Euliya. Locris is also a half brother to Enperia (by Sir Ivor), dam of Italian listed stakes winner Imaret (by Daring Display), second dam of multiple Irish Group 3 winner Idris, and third dam of French Group 3 winner Potaro.

Locris’s dam, Ormara, is an unraced full sister to two-time French champion Coronation V and to Djeralda, second dam of Italian Group 3 winner Maumann. She is a half sister to 1952 Prix La Force winner Aram (by Pharis) and 1965 Prix Maurice de Nieuil winner Emerald (by Auriban). She is also a half sister to Esmenda (by Pharis), second dam of Uruguayan Group 2 winner Pasadena and third dam of 1989 Uruguayan champion 2-year-old male Lancaster.

Ormara, in turn, is out of 1941 French champion 2-year-old filly and 1942 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (French One Thousand Guineas) winner Esmeralda (by Tourbillon). Produced from Sanaa (by Asterus), Esmeralda is a full sister to Tanis, dam of 1951 Prix Royal-Oak (French St. Leger) winner Stymphale (by Pharis), 1948 Ascot Gold Vase winner Estoc (by Jock), and stakes winner Alcinus (by Pharis). She is a half sister to French and English stakes winner Narses (by Blue Peter), to English stakes winner Nyangal (by Djebel), and to Geranium (by Mahmoud), dam of 1951 Prix de Royallieu winner and multiple stakes producer Monrovia (by Pharis) and French stakes winner Geraphar (by Pharis). Esmeralda is also a half sister to Galina (by Goya II), dam of 1954 Prix de Pomone winner Caralina (by Caracalla), and to Estremida (by Djebel), dam of 1959 Prix de Flore winner Phigalia (by Pharis) and 1960 Prix Eugene Adam winner Anaram II (by Auriban).

Fun facts
  • Locris was the name of a region of ancient Greece; the name was derived from the tribal name of its inhabitants, the Locrians. Two of the major heroes of the Iliad, Ajax the Lesser and Patroclus, were said to have been Locrians, and the first written Greek law code was known as the “Locrian code.”
