While the great English racehorse Brigadier Gerard was a disappointment at stud, he did something many more heralded stallions have failed to do by getting a son capable of passing on his male line. This son, 1976 Prix Thomas Bryon (FR-G3) winner General, was sent to Argentina, where he sired Lord At War. A champion in his native Argentina, Lord At War became a multiple Grade 1 winner in the United States before going on to a successful stud career in Kentucky. None of his sons were able to take up his mantle, but Lord At War is the broodmare sire of 2002 American champion 3-year-old male War Emblem and of 2009 Santa Anita Derby (USA-G1) winner Pioneerof the Nile, whose son American Pharoah became the 12th winner of the American Triple Crown in 2015.

As an individual
A lengthy chestnut horse, Lord At War had exceptionally light, fluent action. He had marked speed that he could carry 10 furlongs and preferred to race on or near the front end. His shoulder was deep and well-angled; his hindquarters were powerful with muscling well down into the gaskins. His legs had short cannons and were clean. He could be faulted for a long back and was slightly shorter-legged in front than most North American Thoroughbreds. He experienced foot trouble that limited him to one win from his six starts following his Santa Anita Handicap triumph. He stood 15.3 hands. He showed marked determination and courage while racing.
As a stallion
According to records kept by The Jockey Club, Lord At War sired 236 winners (60.4%) and 44 stakes winners (11.3%) from 391 named foals. The Blood-Horse credits Lord At War with 47 stakes winners (12.0%). Lord At War's stock were typically durable and better with maturity, and many performed best on turf.
