Luhuk (USA)

February 18, 1991 – February 7, 2019

Forty Niner (USA) x Royal Stance (USA), by Dr. Fager (USA)

Family No. 22-b
A well-bred scion of an excellent family, Luhuk was talented enough to win at the listed stakes level but was far from a first-class racehorse. Nevertheless, he had enough of both pedigree and performance to make him an attractive prospect for export as a stallion prospect. Sent to Argentina, he never quite reached the top of the tree as a stallion but still became an important sire and broodmare sire.

Race record

18 starts, 6 wins, 2 seconds, 1 third, US$107, 105 (includes converted English earnings)

1994:
  • Won Arlington International Stakes(ENG-L, about 10FT, Newbury)
  • Won R.O.A. Foundation Stakes (ENG-L, 10FT, Goodwood)
  • 2nd Greenham Stakes (ENG-G3, 7FT, Newbury)
  • 3rd Burtonwood Brewery Rose of Lancaster Stakes (ENG-G3, about 10FT, Haydock)

Connections

Foaled in Kentucky, Luhuk was bred by Edward A. Cox Jr. and was sold to Shadwell Estate Co. for US$500,000 through the 1992 Keeneland July sale. He was owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum and was trained by John Dunlop. Luhuk entered stud in 1996 at Haras La Quebrada, Argentina. In 2004-2005, he stood the Northern Hemisphere breeding season at Gainesway, Lexington, Kentucky. Following the 2005 Northern Hemisphere season, Haras La Quebrada bought out all remaining North American interests in the horse and Luhuk remained in Argentina thereafter. The stallion was pensioned in 2015 due to declining fertility and died in 2019.
