Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Malacate was bred by Thomas C. Sturgill. A US$40,000 yearling purchase from the 1974 Keeneland July sale, he raced for Mexican actress María Félix, the wife of French financier Alex Berger. He was trained by François Boutin. Following the 1976 season, Malacate was syndicated for £11,500 per share (giving him a total valuation of £440,000), with Maria Felix retaining a quarter of the shares and Irish horseman Tim Rogers purchasing another quarter. He showed subnormal fertility when first entering stud in 1977, was returned to racing following the breeding season, and showed somewhat improved fertility on his return to the stud. He was exported to Japan in 1980 and was officially announced as pensioned on October 12, 1991.
