Maracuja had one moment in the sun when she scored a 14-1 upset in the 2021 Coaching Club American Oaks (USA-G1) at the expense of eventual divisional champion Malathaat and multiple Grade 1 winner Clairiere. She was injured early in her 4-year-old season and was retired to the broodmare ranks.
Race record
11 starts, 3 wins, 2 seconds, 1 third, US$588,200
2021:
As an individual
A good-sized, eye-catching gray mare with a dominant personality and marked presence, the long-striding Maracuja did her best running from off the pace. She was retired after suffering a career-ending injury to her right front ankle in her third race of 2022, the Lady Jacqueline Stakes at Thistledown.
As a producer
As of April 8, 2025, Maracuja has no produce.
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Maracuja was bred by River Bend Farm, Austin Musselman, and Janie Musselman. Sold for US$200,000 through the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga August yearling sale, she was owned by Beach Haven Thoroughbreds, with Medallion Racing, Parkland Thoroughbreds, and Barry Fowler buying into the filly after her win in the Coaching Club American Oaks. She was trained by Rob Atras and was ridden to her win in the Coaching Club American Oaks by Ricardo Santana Jr.
Pedigree notes
Maracuja is inbred 4x5 to two-time American champion sire Mr. Prospector and 5x5 to eight-time American champion sire Bold Ruler, the 1957 American Horse of the Year. She is out of Patti’s Regal Song, a stakes-placed half sister to 1999 Adirondack Stakes (USA-G2) winner Regally Appealing (by Valid Appeal), second dam of multiple Grade 2 winner Appealing Tale. Patti’s Regal Song is also a half sister to juvenile stakes winner Regal Miss Copelan (by Copelan), dam of 2004 Remsen Stakes (USA-G2) winner Rockport Harbor (by Unbridled’s Song) and second dam of Canadian Grade 3 winner A. A. Azula’s Arch, and to Regal Sweep (by End Sweep), dam of multiple stakes winner In the Fairway (by Posse). In addition, Patti’s Regal Song is a half sister to Regal Point (by Point Given), dam of listed stakes winner Her Majesty’s Flag (by Midshipman).
Patti’s Regal Song and her sibs are out of restricted stakes winner Regal Pennant, whose sire Banner Bob (by the Bold Ruler horse Herculean) won the 1985 Malibu Stakes and Sheridan Stakes (both Grade 2). Regal Pennant, in turn, is out of unraced Regal Relation (by two-time Prix du Conseil de Paris, FR-G2, winner Kamaraan II). The next dam in Maracuja’s tail-female line, the winning Viceregal mare Regal Tad, is a half sister to stakes winners Triumvir (by Grey Monarch) and Stradwin (by Stratus).
Regal Tad, in turn, is out of juvenile stakes winner Tad (by Windfields), a half sister to stakes winners Squire John (by Bunty Lawless) and Judo King (by Chop Chop). Produced from the winning Swift and Sure mare Fighting Fit, Tad is also a half sister to Swift Turn (by Tournoi), dam of stakes winner Lydon Road (by Dehav Dove).

Fun facts
- Maracuja’s name is the Portuguese word for the passion fruit or granadilla, fruits produced by several plants of the genus Passiflora that are native to subtropical regions of Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. “Maracujá” is derived from the Tupi “mara kuya,” which translates to “fruit that serves itself.” The English name “passion fruit” is derived from the plant’s flower, which was used by Catholic missionaries to the region to picture points from Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection.
- Maracuja’s win in the Coaching Club American Oaks was the first Grade 1 win for trainer Rob Atras.
