5/19/2017

It's time for this year's special Preakness trivia challenge. Can you answer all five questions before post time? All answers can be found somewhere on the website.

1) In what year did the Preakness change from a race run under allowance conditions to one run at level weights of 126 pounds for colts and 121 for fillies?

2) This lucky Preakness winner is the only winner of an American Triple Crown race to have been bred to two mares that earned American Horse of the Year honors. Who is he?

3) Who was the first Preakness winner to be presented with the Woodlawn Vase, considered the most valuable trophy in American sports?

4) This Preakness winner was the first horse to run in all three legs of what is now considered to be the American Triple Crown. Who was he?

5) This Preakness winner helped make his trainer the first to sweep the American Triple Crown series with different horses in the same year. Who was this horse, and who was the stablemate who completed the triple?

Since I did so well last time, I figured I'd try it again:

1 - 1917, according to the DRF article "History of the Preakness" published in 1922

2 - Bernardini - bred to Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra

3 - Kalitan in 1917

4 - War Cloud in 1918, Finished first in the first division of the Preakness, placed 4th in Kentucky Derby and finished 2nd in the Belmont.

5.- Timber Country, Thunder Gulch won the Derby & Belmont - both trained by D. Wayne Lukas

All correct except #1---the weights weren't fixed at modern standards until 1924.

Hmmm. I'll make a note of it in my TC runner database. Thanks for the trivia challenges, it's been fun.
