2020 Preakness Trivia Challenge

10/2/2020

As we conclude possibly the strangest American Triple Crown series of all time, here's a special Preakness trivia challenge in honor of the occasion. See if you can come up with all five answers by Preakness post time!

1) This Preakness Stakes winner was not an American champion but shared his name with another horse who was. What was the shared name of these horses, and in what years did they accomplish their signature feats?

2) What horse was the longest shot to win the Preakness?

3) Who was the youngest jockey to win the Preakness Stakes, and what horse carried him to victory?

4) This Preakness Stakes winner took such a liking to water from a Florida sulphur spring that he would raise a fuss if he didn't get his daily ration. Who was he?

5) It was all in the family for this Preakness winner, as his trainer had also trained his sire, his dam, and his older full brother. Who was he, and who was the trainer who enjoyed success with this family cluster?

I think these are the correct answers.

1.) I'm not sure on this one
2.) Master Derby in 1975
3.) Steve Cauthen riding Affirmed in 1978 also won that year's triple crown at the age of 18
4.) I'm not sure on this one
5.) This one is my best guess. James "Sunny" Fitzsimmons trained Gallant Fox, Flambino, the sire and dam of Omaha who won the Preakness in 1935 along with the 1935 Triple Crown. Mr. Fitzsimmons also trained Omaha's younger brother Flares.

Good effort, Frost!

1) Vigil, the name of the 1876 American co-champion 3yo male and the 1923 Preakness Stakes winner.

2) Master Derby is correct.

3) Jack "Cowboy" Kaenel was only 16 when he won the Preakness Stakes aboard Aloma's Ruler in 1992.

4) Bally Ache, the 1960 Preakness winner, was the horse who developed a taste for Florida sulphur water.

5) Del Carroll trained 1972 Preakness winner Bee Bee Bee as well as his sre Better Bee, his dam Paula, and his older full brother, 1966 Blue Grass Stakes winner Abe's Hope. Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons was a great guess but doesn't quite fit the clues as Flares was Omaha's younger (not older) full brother.
