The crystal ball

As the Thoroughbred industry looks toward 2015, optimism appears to be abounding, at least at the upper levels of the market. I am not so sure it is justified overall. Despite the spins applied by politicians of various stripes, this is still a very shaky recovery -- if you care to call it that at all. I don't.

Perhaps my view is a bit jaundiced by location. I live in an area where poverty is rampant. Seven years ago, over 50% of the students at the elementary school my daughter then attended qualified for free or reduced price lunches through the school. The figure is closer to 80% now. A lot of those students would go hungry on the weekends if it weren't for a local church's backpack ministry that provides packages of foods that don't require heating or refrigeration. I doubt most of those packages would meet Michelle Obama's standards for healthy lunches. I doubt the kids care.

The pain is still very much present further up the social scale. Take a drive to nearby Marion County and you'll see any number of small to medium-sized farms for sale. Some of those signs have been out there for years. The government may tell you that jobs are being created, but that's not much comfort to people who have lost good full-time positions and are now scrambling to make ends meet on a patchwork of part-time jobs at much lower wages. Most of the jobs available are in service industries, never a very high-paying sector to begin with and worse than ever now that full-time jobs have become a liability for employers.

For the folks at the top of the horse industry, things aren't looking bad. But it wouldn't take much to shove the lower and middle markets into another downward spiral. A surge in energy costs due to ideology-driven EPA overregulation could do the trick; so could a spate of bad weather running up the cost of hay and feed supplies. Maybe the optimism at the top is justified, but the view down here is a lot less rosy.

Elaina got it. The two 20th-century mares to have produced two winners of a single American Triple Crown race are Leisure (1900, by Meddler), dam of the Preakness Stakes winners Royal Tourist (1908) and Holiday (1914), and Better Than Honour (1996, by Deputy Minister), dam of the Belmont Stakes winners Jazil (2006) and Rags to Riches (2007).

Only two 20th-century mares have produced two winners of the same American Triple Crown race. Name them and their successful offspring. (Hint: Two different Triple Crown races are involved, one for each mare.)

Thanks to action by the European Commission on December 8, horse meat and products made from horse meat can no longer be imported from Mexico to Europe. The European Commission's decision, which was based on findings of inhumane treatment of horses during transport to the slaughterhouses, should put a sizable dent in the number of horses shipped from the United States to Mexico for slaughter and may also impact traffic to Canada, which came close to incurring a similar ban for similar reasons.

Because other cultures do not necessarily share widespread American feelings about the use of horses as human food, the ethics of sending horses to slaughter can be legitimately debated. But I think both pro- and anti-slaughter advocates can agree that no living horse should be transported anywhere for any purpose without being provided adequate food, water and care while in transit. Even chickens deserve better than that.

It should be noted that the ban is not necessarily permanent; should future inspections indicate that the transport issues have been addressed, the EC's ban may be lifted. But for now, a well-deserved slap has been given to those who would rather scrape out the last penny of profit than provide basic care to the animals in their hands, and it is aimed at the only place such people will heed: their wallets.

Among America's top 100 racehorses of the 20th century, no one set more time records than Round Table. He set or tied 15 track, American or world records during his career.

Friday trivia challenge, a day late

My apologies for being late -- chaperoning a party for nine teenage girls does tend to drive other things out of the head!

Here's the question: Among America's top 100 racehorses of the 20th century, I set or equaled more time records than any other. Who am I, and how many records did I break or tie?

Good news, bad news

The good news: Palace Malice is to return in 2015. The bad news: he only has a five-race campaign planned.

It's good to see a major runner come back to the races for once instead of being retired to stud with an injury that isn't necessarily career-ending. And, truth be told, if he can sweep them -- or just the last four of the five -- he'll have as good a shot at Horse of the Year as anyone. Four straight Grade I wins with the last in the Breeders' Cup Classic (USA-I) would weigh heavily with a lot of folks. No one will be able to accuse his connections of running from anything, either; with his schedule out this early, it's a case of "come and get me -- if you dare."

But just five races? I know that sort of campaign isn't uncommon in Europe, but the style of training and racing is different there and horses often prepare for major events with private trials that serve the purpose of prep races. A five-race schedule sure doesn't suggest soundness and durability by American standards. It's also perilously easy to blow a hole in. Horses aren't machines, and as trainers of the two-Derby-prep school know, once you miss one target race, the whole schedule is thrown off. Too often it becomes a rush to catch up that benefits no one.

I suspect that in Palace Malice's case, a couple of "just in case" alternate races have been penciled in, but I suspect even more that it would take only one real clunker to have the horse retired for good. I hope it will be otherwise, because with Shared Belief, California Chrome, Bayern, Tonalist and other good 3-year-olds looking as though they'll be sticking around for another year, Palace Malice could sure add some spice to an already-intriguing handicap division. But another injury to Palace Malice, a couple of newly turned 4-year-olds getting hurt, and the older males could go from "Yee-haw!" to "yawn" as fast as this year's bunch did.

Exterminator. His "unplaced" finish in a one-horse event was a 1922 time trial at Hawthorne Park, in which his "opponent" was the track record. Ordinarily, this would have been considered an exhibition and not part of the horse's official race record, but Exterminator's "race against time" was dignified with an official chart and statistics as a publicity stunt.
