Talented enough to be a champion at 2, Maria's Mon was nonetheless a case of “what might have been,” as he was never able to come back to his best form after an ankle fracture that caused him to miss the 1995 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (USA-G1). Sadly, his stud career was similar as he died relatively young and did not have the chance to benefit from the successes of his champion daughter Wait a While and his Kentucky Derby (USA-G1) winning son Super Saver. Through Super Saver, Maria's Mon is the paternal grandsire of 2015 American champion male sprinter Runhappy, continuing a branch of the Raise a Native male line descending from Majestic Prince.
Race record
7 starts, 4 wins, 1 second, 1 third, US$507,140
1995:
Honors
Eclipse Award, American champion 2-year-old male (1995)
Assessments
Co-highweighted with Breeders' Cup Juvenile (USA-G1) winner Unbridled's Song at 126 pounds on the Experimental Free Handicap for American juveniles of 1995, 2 pounds above Hennessy.
As an individual
A well-balanced gray horse with good length and scope, short cannons and a good, straight hind leg, Maria's Mon stood 16.1 hands at the withers and slightly higher at the quarters. He was sensible and professional as a racehorse. As a stallion he had a good disposition and was quite affectionate toward Pin Oak Stud owner Josephine Abercrombie, who regularly brought him his favorite treat, sugar cubes.
As a stallion
According to records kept by The Jockey Club, Maria's Mon sired 627 winners (64.0%) and 55 stakes winners (5.6%) from 980 named foals. The Blood-Horse credits Maria's Mon with 62 stakes winners (6.3%).

Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Maria's Mon was bred by Morton Rosenthal and raced in the colors of his wife, Rosalind Rosenthal. The Rosenthals later sold an interest in Maria's Mon to Josephine Abercrombie while the colt was still in training. Maria's Mon was trained by Richard Schosberg. He entered stud in Kentucky in 1997 at Abercrombie's Pin Oak Stud and stood there throughout his stud career. He was humanely destroyed September 14, 2007, due to an illness that caused multiple organ failure and severe laminitis.
Pedigree notes
Maria's Mon is outcrossed through five generations. His dam Carlotta Maria is out of 1978 Sheridan Handicap (USA-G2) winner Water Malone (by Naskra), a full sister to Tamanaco Day, whose five stakes winners include 1991 Singapore Derby winner Tamanaco (by Foolish Pleasure) and 1993 Landaluce Stakes (USA-G2) winner Rhapsodic (by Dixieland Band). Water Malone is also a full sister to Malone Water, dam of multiple stakes winner Remiewaterbluz (by Lucky So n' So). In addition, Water Malone is a half sister to 1983 Santa Anita Derby (USA-G1) winner Marfa (by Foolish Pleasure) and to Think Music (by Stop the Music), dam of Grade 1-placed multiple listed stakes winner Music Prospector (by Crafty Prospector).
Water Malone and her siblings were produced from the Stratmat mare Gray Matter, a half sister to stakes winners Social Song (by Social Climber), Restless Song (by Restless Wind) and Rouge Chanteur (by Red Gar). The female line traces back to the great English taproot mare Paraffin through her granddaughter Ladasine, whose family did good service in the stud of Harry Payne Whitney and his son C. V. “Sonny” Whitney.
