A member of the first crop of the vicious 1896 Belmont Stakes winner Hastings, Masterman helped make his sire’s reputation as a source of high-class stock. He was a good 2-year-old and gave promise of being a better 3-year-old, when he emulated his sire’s victory in the Belmont Stakes. Unfortunately, he was unable to follow up on that victory either during the rest of his racing career or in the stud.
