Before there was No Class, there was Mintwina, one of the first notable broodmares in Canadian history. While she did not found an enduring female family, she produced two members of the Canadian Racing Hall of Fame among her four stakes winners, and her name continues to appear in pedigrees through her son Bunty Lawless.

Connections
Mintwina was bred and owned by Willis Sharpe Kilmer; by 1933, she had passed to the ownership of Jack Whyte. As a broodmare, she was owned by William Morrissey, who claimed her for CAN$2,000 from a race at Fort Erie in 1933.
Pedigree notes
Mintwina is outcrossed through five generations. Generally accepted as having been sired by juvenile stakes winner Mint Briar (a half brother to 1917 American champion 2-year-old male Sun Briar by the Spearmint horse Assagai), Mintwina was stakes-placed on the track as a 2-year-old and is a half sister to 1928 Jerome Handicap winner Sun Edwin (by Sun Briar). She is also a half sister to 1933 Adirondack Handicap winner Sun Celtic (by Sun Briar), dam of 1946 Queens County Handicap winner Helioptic (by Heliopolis), and to Beauedwina (by Sun Beau), dam of multiple Canadian stakes winner Arbor Vita (by the Hourless horse Hillsborough). In addition, Mintwina is a half sister to Sun Edna (by Sun Briar), dam of stakes winner Grey Wolf (by Gino), and to Dark Edwina (by Traumer), second dam of 1948 Haggin Stakes winner Audacious Man.
Mintwina and her siblings were produced from multiple stakes winner Edwina, whose full sister Celiva is the dam of 1931 Remsen Handicap winner Cambal (by Campfire). Another full sister to Edwina, Celtiva, is the dam of multiple steeplechase stakes winner Celeritas (by Zeus). The dam of Edwina and her siblings, Lady Godiva (by Hanover), is a half sister to stakes winner Goodrich (by Patron) and is out of Edith Gray, by the great Ten Broeck out of Alice Gray (by Enquirer) and so a full sister to 1886 Tennessee Derby winner Jim Gray.

Mintwina produced 12 named foals, of which 11 started and 10 won. Her important foals are as follow:
- Bunty Lawless (1935, by Ladder) won the 1938 King’s Plate. Voted as the best Canadian racehorse of the first half of the 20th century in a 1951 poll conducted by the Canadian Press, he is a member of the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame. He sired 26 stakes winners including King’s Plate winners Epic and McGill and fellow Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame member Windfields.
- Willie the Kid (1937, by Roselyon) won the 1940 King’s Plate. He sired only 10 foals, none of any significance.
- Casa Camara (1944, by Siete Colores) was generally considered the best Canadian 2-year-old of either sex in 1946. A member of the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, she produced 1957 Coronation Futurity winner Stole the Ring (by Bull Page), in turn the dam of multiple Canadian stakes winner Mink Stole (by Nearctic).
- The Brat (1945, by Filisteo) won the 1948 King’s Plate at Blue Bonnets. She produced nothing of any distinction.

Fun facts
- Morrissey claimed Mintwina partly out of spite against Jack Whyte, who had previously refused to sell him the filly at a lower price. After being claimed by Morrissey, Mintwina promptly broke down with a fractured sesamoid in her next race. Morrissey wanted to have her destroyed, but on the advice of his veterinarian, Dr. R. K. Hodgson, kept her as a broodmare and bred her to Ladder. The resulting foal was Bunty Lawless.
