Miss Oceana (USA)

February 13, 1981 – 1988

Alydar (USA) x Kittiwake (USA), by Sea-Bird (FR)

Family 4-m

Part of a spectacular first crop of juveniles sent out by Alydar, Miss Oceana was defeated only once in six races at 2 and won three Grade 1 events. She topped the Experimental Free Handicap for fillies of her year and narrowly missed securing an Eclipse Award, which went to the similarly sired Althea after that rival soundly defeated colts twice. Miss Oceana continued to race and win at the top level as a 3-year-old but was a sad disappointment as a broodmare, producing only two unimportant colts before her premature death.

Assessments

Rated at 120 pounds on the Experimental Free Handicap for American juveniles of 1983, tops among fillies and 1 pound above the official divisional champion, Althea.

Rated at 125 pounds on the Daily Racing Form's Free Handicap for American 3-year-old fillies of 1984, 1 pound below champion Life's Magic.

As an individual

An exceptionally attractive bay mare, Miss Oceana was elegant and possessed excellent overall conformation. She handled both fast and sloppy surfaces well.

As a producer

Miss Oceana produced two named foals, both colts; neither won a stakes race, and neither had any impact at stud.

Connections

Foaled in Virginia, Miss Oceana was bred and owned by Mr. and Mrs. Taylor Hardin's Newstead Farm. She was trained by Woody Stephens. She sold to Carl Icahn for a then-record US$7 million as a broodmare in 1985, in foal to Northern Dancer. Miss Oceana died in 1988 while foaling her second foal, a colt by Seattle Slew; he survived but, under the name of Cien Fuegos, won only a single race from 12 starts.
