A first-rate race mare, Monomoy Girl won seven Grade 1 races in her career, including two editions of the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (USA-G1). Her accomplishments were the more remarkable in that, after earning a championship at 3, she missed her entire 4-year-old season due to various ailments and came back to championship form as a 5-year-old. Retired after a brief 6-year-old campaign, she is now a young broodmare.

Assessments
Rated at 118 pounds on the 2018 Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings, 12 pounds below overall highweights Cracksman (the top older horse in Europe from 9.5-11F) and Winx (the Australian Horse of the Year) but best among 3-year-old fillies on dirt.
Rated at 120 pounds on the 2020 Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings, 10 pounds below overall highweight Ghaiyyath (the European Horse of the Year) and two pounds below the top-rated filly or mare, Enable (the co-highweight older female in Europe over 11-14F).
Rated at 120 pounds on the 2021 Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings, 9 pounds below overall highweight Knicks Go (the American Horse of the Year) and 3 pounds below the top-rated filly or mare, Verry Elleegant (the Australian Horse of the Year).
As an individual
A strongly made chestnut mare with a graceful way of going, Monomoy Girl did not race at 4 after suffering an attack of colic and a pulled gluteal muscle and was retired after two starts at 6 due to a non-displaced sesamoid fracture suffered while training at Churchill Downs. She was a winner on turf as a 2-year-old but spent most of her career racing on dirt. She had a sensible disposition but could be “quirky” while racing due to losing mental focus. She was not wedded to any particular running style and could be placed as her jockey desired.
As a producer
Monomoy Girl’s first mating was to Into Mischief in 2022. She produced a colt on February 17, 2023.
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Monomoy Girl was bred by FPF LLC and Highfield Ranch. A $100,000 yearling purchase from the 2016 Keeneland September sale, she was owned by Michael Dubh, Monomoy Stables (Sol Kumin), Elkstone Group (Stuart Grant), and Bethlehem Stables (Michael Caruso). She was trained by Brad Cox. Excepting her first start, when she was ridden by Marcelino Pedroza, she was ridden by Florent Geroux. Sold for $9.5 million as a racing or broodmare prospect at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton November sale, she was thereafter owned by Spendthrift Farm, the microshare partnership MyRacehorse Stable (under a lease-to-race arrangement), and Madaket Stable (Sol Kumin).

Sired by 2012 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (USA-G1) winner Tapizar (by Tapit), Monomoy Girl is inbred 5x4 to 1977 American Horse of the Year Seattle Slew, winner of that year’s American Triple Crown. She is a half sister to 2020 Risen Star Stakes Presented by Lamarque Ford (USA-G2) winner Mr. Monomoy (by Palace Malice).
Monomoy Girl is out of the winner Drumette, a half sister to 2006 Knickerbocker Handicap (USA-G3) winner Drum Major (by Dynaformer). The next dam in Monomoy Girl’s tail-female line is Mnemosyne (by 1984 Del Mar Futurity, USA-G1, winner Saratoga Six, by Alydar), a half sister to listed stakes winner Afleet Floozie (by Afleet). Mnemosyne, in turn, is out of the stakes-placed Smarten mare My Lady Love, whose dam Lady Dulcinea (by Nantallah) won the 1965 Adirondack Stakes and also produced 1980 American champion 2-year-old filly Heavenly Cause (by Grey Dawn II), Grade 2 winner Quixotic Lady (by Quadratic), and stakes winner Jacques Who (by Grey Dawn II).

Fun facts
- Named for the Monomoy (or Manomoy) people of indigenous Americans, Monomoy Island is an eight-mile-long sand spit extending southwest from Chatham, a fishing town located on the southeastern coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Due to shifting sand, winds, and seas, Monomoy is sometimes connected to the mainland and sometimes is not; it is usually divided into North Monomoy Island and South Monomoy Island. Both, along with Morris Island, are included in the Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge.
- Monomoy Girl was the 13th filly to win the Kentucky Oaks/Coaching Club American Oaks double.
