Family 3-e
Octave started off 2007 with a bad case of “seconditis,” finishing second in her first four outings as a sophomore, but a trip to New York following her runner-up finish behind champion Rags to Riches netted a couple of Grade 1 trophies. After her Coaching Club American Oaks (USA-G1) win, she placed three more times in graded events (two at the Grade 1 level) before retiring to the paddocks. Thus far, she has been a much better racer than broodmare.
Race record
13 starts, 4 wins, 7 seconds, 2 thirds US$1,660,934

2007:
Honors
Eclipse Award finalist, American champion 3-year-old filly (2007)
Assessments
Rated at 116 pounds on the 2007 World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings for her third-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, 7 pounds below Rags to Riches, who was the top-rated female based on her performances in the Kentucky Oaks and Belmont Stakes (USA-G1).
As an individual
A big, strong gray mare (officially registered as gray or roan), Octave has a pleasant disposition.
As a producer
As of January 2024, Octave has produced seven named foals of racing age; six have started and four have won. The best of the group thus far is Group 3-placed Portamento (by Shamardal).
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Octave was bred by Mr. and Mrs. Martin Wygod. A US$350,000 yearling at the 2005 Keeneland September sale, she raced in the colors of Starlight Stable and Donald J. Lucarelli. She was trained by Todd Pletcher and was ridden to her Coaching Club American Oaks score by John Velazquez. Octave sold to Darley for US$4 million at the 2007 Keeneland November sale.
Pedigree notes
Octave is inbred 3x3 to 1971 French champion older male and 1977 French champion sire Caro, 5x5x5 to 1945 St. Leger Stakes winner and 1964 English/Irish champion sire Chamossaire (a three-time leader of the Irish general sire list), and 5x5 to two-time French champion sire Wild Risk. She is a full sister to stakes winner Unbridled Behavior and a half sister to 1999 Delta Airlines Top Flight Handicap (USA-G2) winner Belle Cherie (by Belong to Me), dam of listed stakes winner Beau Choix (by Elusive Quality) and juvenile stakes winner Last Best Place (by Gone West). She is also a half sister to restricted stakes winner Be Mine Tonight (by Belong to Me).
Octave and her siblings are out of listed stakes winner Belle Nuit (by multiple Grade 1 winner Dr. Carter, by Caro), whose multiple Grade 1-winning half sister Ms. Eloise (by Nasty and Bold) is the dam of Grade 3 winner Bibury Court (by Ferdinand) and listed stakes winner Princess Eloise (by Chief’s Crown). Belle Nuit is also a half sister to stakes winner Belle of Amherst (by Far Out East).
The next dam in Octave’s tail-female line is the Tom Rolfe mare Belle Noel, whose dam Christmas Belle II is by 1964 English Horse of the Year Santa Claus, winner of that year’s Derby Stakes, Irish Sweeps Derby, and Irish Two Thousand Guineas. A half sister to stakes winner Royal Sword (by Right Royal) and to Bay Tree (by Relko), dam of the multiple stakes-winning hurdler Ravaro (by Raga Navarro), Christmas Belle II is out of The Blonde (by Wild Risk), also the dam of Madam Guillotine (by Blakeney), dam of restricted stakes winner Sweet Velocity (by Danzig); of Mistress Gay (by Sir Gaylord), dam of multiple stakes winner Misnan (by Nantequos); and of White Streak (by Grey Dawn II), dam of Venzuelan stakes winner Cardelino (by Majestic Bidder).
