One Count was late in finding his best form, but with maturity he became the best and most consistent stayer of his crop. He lacked tactical speed, however, and like most horses of his type, was not a consistently successful stallion although he did sire champion Airmans Guide and Kentucky Broodmare of the Year Hasty Queen II.

He is a half brother to eight-time stakes winner Post Card (by Firethorn), to 1951 Flamingo Stakes winner Yildiz (by Mahmoud), and to 1963 Selima Stakes winner My Card (by My Babu). One Count is also a half brother to Roodles (by Princequillo), dam of the good stakes mare Singing Rain (by Sensitivo), second dam of four stakes winners, and third dam of three-time champion and 1980 Prix de Diane de Revlon (French Oaks, FR-G1) winner Mrs. Penny. Ace Card and Adile are out of the winning Man o' War mare Furlough, a half sister to stakes winners Dawn Attack (by Man o' War's son Mars) and Flaught (by Firethorn) and to steeplechase stakes winner H Hour (by Mars).
