Not too many horses have the versatility to win top-level races at a flat mile and 12 furlongs, but Palace Malice did just that. A Classic winner at 3, he was a leading contender in the older male division at 4 before being forced to the sidelines by a bone bruise. He was unable to come back to the same level at 5 and was retired to stud, where he has made a promising start.

Notable progeny
Jantar Mantar (JPN), Structor (USA)
Connections
Bred in Kentucky by Lane’s End Farm (William S. Farish III), Palace Malace was owned by Dogwood Stable after being purchased for US$200,000 from the 2012 Keeneland April sale of 2-year-olds in training. (A successful pinhook, he had originally been purchased for US$25,000 from the 2011 Keeneland September yearling sale by Colin Brennan.) He was trained by Todd Pletcher and was ridden to his Belmont Stakes win by Mike Smith. Three Chimneys Farm purchased a 50 percent interest in the colt in September 2014 with the proviso that they would own Palace Malice in toto at the conclusion of his racing career. Palace Malice entered stud in Kentucky in 2016 at Three Chimneys Farm.
Pedigree notes
Palace Malice is inbred 5x5 to the great international sire Northern Dancer. He is out of 2006 Audubon Oaks winner Palace Rumor (by multiple Grade/Group 1 winner Royal Anthem, by 1986 American champion turf male Theatrical), a half sister to juvenile stakes winner Jumpifyoudare (by Jump Start) and restricted stakes winners Maya’s Storm (by Stormy Atlantic) and Whisper to Curlin (by Curlin).
Palace Rumor and her siblings are out of the winning Red Ransom mare Whisperifyoudare, whose half sister Sweet Trip (by Carson City) is the dam of 2009 Hollywood Gold Cup Handicap (USA-G1) winner Rail Trip (by Jump Start). Whisperifyoudare is also a half sister to stakes-placed Broken Silence (by Broken Vow), dam of listed stakes winner Stronger Than Ever (by Congrats), and to Shylock’s Daughter (by Star Dabbler), dam of listed stakes winner Celtic Striker (by Congrats).
Whisperifyoudare, in turn, is out of listed stakes winner Stellar Affair, a daughter of 1986 Breeders’ Cup Classic (USA-G1) winner Skywalker (by Relaunch). Stellar Affair is a half sister to Caribbean Affair (by Red Ransom), dam of listed stakes winner No Place Like It (by Real Quiet), and is out of the Grey Dawn II mare Fawn and Hahn, whose Group 3-placed dam Ecstatica is a Damascus half sister to Canadian Group 3 winner To Tipperary (by Ack Ack).
