Still regarded as one of the finest race mares ever bred in Peru, Pamplona II swept her country’s Quadruple Crown at 3 and trained on to be Peru’s top older female at 4. Proving she was not merely beating weak local competition, she was sent to Argentina to compete against that nation’s best and ran a strong third in the Gran Premio 25 de Mayo (now a Group 1 race) behind 1959 Brazilian Horse of the Year Escorial and 1960 Brazilian champion older male Farwell. Purchased by Nelson Bunker Hunt for his American broodmare band, she again proved her worth by producing two European Classic winners in Pampered Miss and Empery.

Pedigree notes
Pamplona II is inbred 4x5 to two-time English champion broodmare sire Chaucer. A full sister to Peruvian stakes winner and three-time Peruvian champion sire Parrot, she was produced from the useful handicapper Society’s Way (by Kingsway). Sociey’s Way, in turn, was produced from unraced Society’s Vote (by the good English juvenile Wyndham, by Blenheim II), whose dam Conversation Piece (by 1933 Yorkshire Gold Cup winner Orpen) won the 1938 Irish Oaks.

Fun facts
- Pamplona II is the only South American-bred mare to have produced the winner of a major European Classic.
- Pamplona is the name of a city of central Spain. Its name refers to the tradition that it was founded by the Roman general Pompey about 75 BCE (giving the site the name Pompaelo). Although Pompey did set up a fortified camp there at that time, archaeological evidence indicates that Pamplona's location has been inhabited since the Bronze Age.
- Pamplona II had several contemporaries also named “Pamplona,” including a 1958 Argentine-bred mare by Panambi, a 1961 American-bred mare by Passado, and a 1963 American-bred by Tim Tam. The Tim Tam mare was the best of the trio; exported to France as a yearling, she was sent on to Germany from there and became the dam of 1976 German champion 3-year-old filly Princess Eboli (by Linden Tree) and multiple French stakes winner Pannonia (by Shoemaker).
