Family 14-c
A lightly raced horse from a strong Canadian family originally developed at Windfields Farm, Phantom Light showed enough ability as a 4-year-old to earn a Sovereign Award but was not really a top-class horse. In fairness, he may not have had a full opportunity to display his ability as he was injured in his lone start against American graded stakes winners (in which he ran last) and never returned to the track. He spent most of his stud career in Tennessee, where he received very limited opportunities and had no impact as a sire.
Race record
10 starts, 4 wins, 1 second, 0 thirds, US$355,710
2003:
Honors
Sovereign Award, Canadian champion older male (2003)
As an individual
A gray horse who was registered as gray or roan, Phantom Light was at his best around two turns. His race record suggests that he was not a very sound individual as he had two gaps in his race record of six months or more prior to his career-ending injury.
As a stallion
According to records compiled by the Jockey Club, Phantom Light sired nine winners and one stakes winner from 45 named foals of racing age. His last reported foal was born in 2020.
Connections
Foaled in Ontario, Phantom Light was bred by Frank Stronach's Adena Springs and raced in the colors of his Stronach Stables after being bought back from the 2000 Ontario autumn yearling sale for CAN$60,000. He was trained by Kevin Attard for his first start and then by Roger Attfield through the end of his brief 3-year-old season. At 4, he was trained by Daniel J. Vella. As a stallion, he stood in Tennessee at Hackett Brothers Thoroughbreds. His last known Thoroughbred foal was born in 2020.
Pedigree notes
Phantom Light is inbred 4x5 to four-time American champion broodmare sire Prince John. He was produced from stakes-placed Kirby Meadow, whose dam Retinue (by Vice Regent) is an unraced half sister to 1982 Dominion Day Handicap (CAN-G3) winner Bejilla (by Quadrangle), multiple Canadian stakes winner Le Danseur (by Lord Durham), and restricted stakes winner Regal Angela (by Regal Intention). Regal Angela is the third dam of 2022 Argentine champion stayer The Punisher, and Retinue is also a half sister to Blue Angel’s Image (by Ruritania), dam of 1991 Premio Bagutta (ITY-G3) winner Blue Daisy (by Shahrastani) and third dam of 2016 Premio Regina Elena (Italian One Thousand Guineas, ITY-G3) winner Conselice.
Retinue and her siblings were produced from Dancing Angela (by Dancer’s Image), a winning half sister to 1973 Canadian champion 3-year-old filly and “Genetic Gem” Square Angel (by Quadrangle), whose descendants include at least eight champions. A daughter of the “Genetic Gem” Nangela (Nearctic x Angela’s Niece, by Tim Tam), Dancing Angela is also a half sister to Miss Nanith (by Victoria Park), second dam of Grade 3 winners Scottish Monk and Wire Me Collect and third dam of 2003 Triple Bend Breeders’ Cup Invitational Handicap (USA-G1) winner Joey Franco, 2005 Vosburgh Stakes (USA-G1) winner Taste of Paradise, 2008 Malibu Stakes (USA-G1) winner Bob Black Jack, and Grade 3 winners Fish Trappe Road and Scott the Great. In addition, Dancing Angela is a half sister to Happy Vixen (by Quadrangle), dam of 1985 Bay Meadows Derby (USA-G3) winner Minutes Away (by Just the Time).
