While Porteño could not quite match the record of his older full brother Buenos Aires in winning the Gran Premio Nacional (Argentine Derby) and Gran Premio Internacional (later known as the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini) in the same year, he won those two races in successive years. He had some success as a sire.

Connections
Porteño was bred at Haras La Curamalán, the breeding operation of Eduardo Casey and Santiago Casey. He went through several owners as a stallion. Beginning his stud career at Leandro Alvarez's Haras Chacabuco, he later went to Pedro Chapar's Haras La Redención. His last owner was Pedro Araya. His last foals were registered in 1917.
Pedigree notes
Porteño is inbred 3x4 to 1851 St. Leger Stakes winner and two-time English champion sire Newminster. A full brother to 1892 Gran Premio Nacional and Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini winner Buenos Aires, he is by Chivalrous (by 1863 City and Suburban Handicap winner and 1874 English champion sire Adventurer), who won the Great Ebor Handicap as a 4-year-old in 1874 but got little of note in England before being exported to Argentina in 1881.
Porteño's dam Sarsaparilla, a daughter of 1873 Royal Hunt Cup winner Wiinslow (by 1863 St. Leger Stakes winner Lord Clifden), was also exported to Argentina in 1881. She was produced from The Plum (by Scandal), whose half sister England's Queen (by King of Trumps) is the second dam of German Two Thousand Guineas winner Konigswinter. The next dam in the tail-female lineage, Gibside Lady (by Rataplan), is out of Lady Hawthorn (by Windhound), a daughter of the excellent Cup racer and 19th-century foundation mare Alice Hawthorn.
