Queen’s Statute (GB)

1954 – c. 1974

Le Lavandou (FR) x Statute (GB), by Son-in-Law (GB)

Family 22-b

“GENETIC GEM”
Queen’s Statute was the issue of a mating between a stallion who had been a quick, precocious juvenile and a mare of stout bloodlines. Like many Thoroughbreds produced by such “fish-and-fowl” matings, Queen’s Statute was not a success on the track; in fact, she never raced. It was in the breeding shed that her versatile genetics proved their worth, making her a foundation mare for E. P. Taylor’s famous Windfields Farm.

Race record

Unraced

As an individual

A big, roomy, correct bay mare with a nice topline and good balance, Queen’s Statute had lop ears but was otherwise attractive.

As a producer

Designated as a Reine-de-Course by pedigree analyst Ellen Parker, Queen’s Statute produced 14 named foals, of which 12 started and won. Her important foals are as follow:
  • Epic Queen (1958, by Epic) won the 1961 Fury Stakes. She was of no importance as a broodmare.
  • Court Royal (1959, by Chop Chop) won four Canadian stakes races and was highweighted among Canadian older females of 1963. She was disappointing as a broodmare.
  • Menedict (1960, by Ménétrier) won three stakes races including the 1963 Canadian Oaks. She is the second dam of 1988 Canadian champion 2-year-old male Mercedes Won and the third dam of 2000 New Zealand Oaks (NZ-G1) winner She’s Country and Australian Group 3 winner Country Lane. Menedict’s more distant descendants include Grade/Group 2 winners Doull, Lazzago, and Zeitlos and Group 3 winners Aryaaf, Augusta Proud, Khulaasa, She Rules, and Thyme for Roses.
  • Queen’s Law (1961, by Queen’s Own) placed in two Canadian stakes races. She is the dam of Canadian stakes winners Queen’s Splendour (by Impressive) and Queen’s Answer (by Northern Answer), the second dam of Grade 2 winner With the Flow, and the third dam of multiple Venezuelan Group 1 winner Mantle. The more distant descendants of Queen’s Law include 2002/03 New Zealand champion juvenile male Maroofity, 2011 Hong Kong champion miler Beauty Flash, New Zealand Group 2 winner Gold Bracelet, and Australian Group 3 winner Into the Red.
  • Dance Act (1966, by Northern Dancer; a gelding) was the Canadian champion handicap horse of 1970 and 1971 and the Canadian champion older horse of 1970.
  • Royal Statute (1969, by Northern Dancer) won one of her eight starts. She is the dam of 1982 English champion 3-year-old filly and 1983 Italian champion older female Awaasif (by Snow Knight), 1981 Fountain of Youth Stakes (USA-G3) winner Akureyri (by Buckpasser), and 1984 Premio Bagutta (ITY-G3) winner Royal Lorna (by Val de l’Orne). She is also the dam of 1976 One Thousand Guineas (ENG-G1) runner-up and “Genetic Gem” Konafa (by Damascus) and of Baederwood (by Tentam), a useful sire in the Mid-Atlantic region. In addition, Royal Statute is the second dam of 1989 Gold Seal Oaks (ENG-G1) winner Snow Bride, Group 2 winners Proskona and Keos, and Grade/Group 3 winners Jarraar (a good but short-lived sire in Brazil), Korveya (a “Genetic Gem”), Lycitus, Majuscule, and Royal Cielo, as well as the good Argentine sire Luhuk. Royal Statute is the third dam of 1995 European champion 3-year-old male Lammtarra, 1986 European champion 3-year-old filly Bosra Sham, 1990 French champion juvenile male Hector Protector, and Grade/Group 1 winners Passineti, Pour Moi, Shanghai, and Sunstrach. Royal Statute’s more distant descendants include three-time Hong Kong Horse of the Year Golden Sixty, 2013 Hong Kong champion stayer California Memory, 2007 Spanish champion imported juvenile male Rituss, and champions or Grade/Group 1 winners Aesop’s Fables, Ciro, Internallyflawless, Polarisation, and Red Giant.
  • Down North (1970, by Victoria Park) won the Victoria Stakes as a juvenile.
  • North of the Law (1972, by Northern Dancer) won the Maryland Futurity. He was exported to Japan for stallion duty in 1977. In 1984, he returned to the United States. Poor fertility may have been an issue for him as he sired only 17 foals, of which one was a stakes winner.
  • Falafel (1973, by Northern Dancer) never raced but is the dam of 1985 Premio Parioli (Italian Two Thousand Guineas, ITY-G1) winner Again Tomorrow (by Honest Pleasure) and 1992 St. James’s Palace Stakes (ENG-G1) winner Brief Truce (by Irish River). She is also the third dam of multiple Japanese Group 3 winner Makoto Brillar. Falafel’s more distant descendants include multiple 2014 Spinaway Stakes (USA-G1) winner Condo Commando, Grade 2 winner Yearly Report, and Japanese Group 3 winner Command Line.

Connections

Queen’s Statute was bred by Fred Humphreys. In 1956, she was imported to Canada, becoming part of the broodmare band for E. P. Taylor’s Windfields Farm. Her 1973 daughter Falafel was her last registered foal.

Pedigree notes

Sired by 1946 Prix d’Arenberg winner Le Lavandou, Queen’s Statute is inbred 4x2 to 1914 Goodwood Cup winner Son-in-Law, a two-time champion sire in England and a strong influence for stamina. She is a full sister to English stakes winner Grand Statute.

Queen’s Statute is out of the Son-in-Law mare Statute, winner of the 1939 Brighton Autumn Cup. Statute, in turn, was produced from the juvenile winner Nina, whose sire, Prince Galahad, won the 1919 Dewhurst Stakes. The next dam in Royal Statute’s tail-female line, unraced Giannina, was by John o’ Gaunt, an unsound horse who was runner-up in the 1904 Two Thousand Guineas and Derby Stakes but is best known as the sire of champion and important sire Swynford.
