A mediocre race mare in spite of being a full or half sister to three Classic winners, Red-and-Blue proved a fountainhead of class when turned to broodmare duty. Although she produced only one stakes winner, that stakes winner was a champion, and four of her daughters became stakes producers, with two breeding on through their own daughters and granddaughters.

After racing for the Dwyer Brothers, she and her half sister Francesca, along with the Dwyers' champion racer Hindoo, were traded to Colonel Ezekiel Clay and Colonel Catesby Woodford for their stakes-winning filly Miss Woodford. Red-and-Blue remained at their Runnymede Stud throughout her broodmare career.
Pedigree notes
Red-and-Blue is inbred 4x5 to 1834 St. Leger Stakes winner and four-time English champion sire Touchstone, 5x4 to eight-time American champion sire Glencoe, and 5x5 to six-time English champion sire Sultan. She is a full sister to 1884 Belmont Stakes winner Panique and a half sister to 1881 Derby Stakes and St. Leger Stakes winner Iroquois, 1879 Preakness Stakes winner Harold, and stakes winners Pera and Francesca, all by Leamington. Francesca produced the stakes-winning colt Pepper (by Hindoo), and Red-and-Blue is also a half sister to the important producer Jaconet (by Leamington; dam of 1888 American co-champion 3-year-old male Sir Dixon and the good stakes winner Belvidere, both by Billet) and to stakes producer Hypatica (by Woodlands). Red-and-Blue and her siblings are out of the stakes-winning Australian mare Maggie B. B., one of the great matriarchs of 19th-century American breeding.
