1966 was a subpar year for the American juvenile filly division, but Regal Gleam was judged the best of the lot after winning the important Frizette Stakes and Selima Stakes late in the season. Considering her breeding, her failure to add any more black type after her juvenile season is surprising, but she more than atoned for this with her successes as a broodmare.
Race record
32 starts, 8 wins, 2 seconds, 4 thirds, US$246,793
1966:
Honors
American co-champion 2-year-old filly (1966)
Assessments
Highweighted among juvenile fillies at 116 pounds on the Experimental Free Handicap for American juveniles of 1966, 3 pounds above the other co-champion juvenile filly, Mira Femme.
As an individual
A dark bay or brown mare, Regal Gleam was well-developed and had a good body, but her legs were less than ideal, particularly in front as she was tied in below the knee. She had a good shoulder, a deep girth, a short back and a sharply sloping croup. She preferred to come from off the pace in her races and was game and willing in a drive. She stood a full 16 hands in November of her juvenile year.
As a producer
Regal Gleam produced five foals, of which three started and won. While she produced only one stakes winner, all her daughters had some significance as producers.
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Regal Gleam was bred and owned by the Bieber-Jacobs Stable, racing in the colors of Patrice Jacobs. She was trained by Hirsch Jacobs. Following her racing career, she became the property of Claiborne Farm in a private purchase and died there of complications of colic in 1976.
