Family 3-o
A versatile racehorse who could run well on dirt and turf and was competitive at distances from 7 to 12 furlongs, Relaunch did his racing in a very tough West Coast division that included Spectacular Bid, John Henry and Flying Paster. He was probably a more talented runner than a bare reading of his race record would indicate but was handicapped by his one-dimensional front-running style. He proved a better stallion than racehorse and became one of the few popular commercial sires of the 1980s and 1990s not descended from either Northern Dancer or Raise a Native.

Rated at 119 pounds on the Daily Racing Form's Free Handicap for American turf males of 1979, 11 pounds below divisional champion Bowl Game and 4 pounds below the top 3-year-old turf runner Golden Act.
Rated at 118 pounds on the Daily Racing Form's Free Handicap for American older males of 1980, 18 pounds below divisional champion and Horse of the Year Spectacular Bid.
As an individual
A gray horse, Relaunch was in many respects a larger version of his sire In Reality with the same lengthy build and short cannons. He had an excellent shoulder and strong hindquarters but was a trifle back at the knee. He was a one-dimensional front-runner and had gameness to go with his natural speed but could not be rated unless he was in front.
As a stallion
According to statistics kept by The Jockey Club, Relaunch sired 477 winners (64.2%) and 86 stakes winners (11.6%) from 742 named foals; The Blood-Horse credits Relaunch with 90 stakes winners (12.1%). His progeny typically had more size and scope than most of the In Reality tribe. They also had natural speed and handled a variety of distances but were prone to having calf knees.
