Although he came from a strong American family, Ride the Rails was well below the best of his crop in ability and was exported to Argentina. An inconsistent stallion, he did fairly well in Argentina but is best known as the sire of Candy Ride, a champion in Argentina and a successful racehorse and sire in the United States.

Ride the Rails was bred by Robert B. Trussell, Jr., and James A. Philpott, Jr. He was owned by J. R. Murrill, who purchased Ride the Rails as a yearling for US$90,000 from the 1992 Keeneland July sale. Ride the Rails entered stud during the 1995 Souhern Hemisphere breeding season at Haras Abolengo, Buenos Aires, Argentina. He stood one Northern Hemisphere season at Pegasus Ranch near Petaluma, California, in 2004 before returning to Argentina. In 2005, Ride the Rails moved to Haras Don Julio, Rio Negro, Uruguay, where he died of colic in August 2010.

- The Ride the Rails Stakes was run at Calder Race Course in 2009. An open stakes for 3-year-olds, it was contested at a mile and 70 yards on dirt.
