After it became apparent that Ride the Trails would never race, Joseph Roebling decided to get rid of her on the grounds that he already had too many non-winners in his broodmare band. John Nerud, then his trainer, bought the filly from him for US$5,000, mostly because he liked her bloodlines. His judgment was vindicated as he bred champion Cozzene and three other stakes winners from her before her death at age 11. Since then, Ride the Trails' family has produced Grade or Group 1 winners in Italy, Japan and the United States.
