Roxinho (BRZ)

August 5, 1998 – c. 2012

Roxinho swept to Brazil’s Horse of the Year title after taking three consecutive Group 1 races at Cidade Jardim. He was then sent to the United States but failed to show his previous form there in a career interrupted by injury. Sent back to Brazil, he saw very limited use at stud and left nothing of any significance.

As an individual

A chestnut horse, Roxinho preferred to stalk the pace during his races. He suffered a serious rear leg injury after making 13 starts in the USA in 2002-2003 but was able to return to racing in 2005.

As a stallion

Roxinho sired only 15 named foals, of which two won.

Connections

Roxinho was bred by Haras Valente and raced for Stud Taj Mahal. Following his win in the Grande Prêmio Derby Paulista, he was exported to the United States, where he was owned by Earle I. Mack and Gregory Fox. He was trained in the USA by Jamie Fox except for his last start, for which he was officially trained by Gregory Fox (Jamie's husband). He returned to Brazil following the conclusion of his racing career in 2005 but sired only 15 foals, of which two were winners. His last known foal was registered in 2013.

Pedigree notes

Roxinho is outcrossed through five generations. Sired by 1991 Brazilian champion 3-year-old male Thignon Lafre, he was produced from Miss Bob, whose sire Especulante won the 1981 Premio Eduardo Casey (ARG-G2) in his native Argentina before being sent to Brazil for stallion duty. Miss Bob is a full sister to 1990 Grande Prêmio Mariano Procopio (BRZ-G2) winner La Pintura.

Miss Bob and La Pintura were produced from unraced Elluff (by multiple Brazilian stakes winner Lunard), whose full sister First Crop won the 1979 Grande Prêmio João Cecilio Ferraz (BRZ-G2) and produced 1989 Prix du Lys (FR-G3) winner Harvest Time (by Noir et Or). Elluff is also a full sister to Jamacahi, dam of Prêmio Presidente João Carlos Leite Penteado (BRZ-G3) winner Rue Royale (by Midnight Tiger). In addition, Elluff is a half sister to Icefield (by Duke of Ragusa), dam of 1992 Grande Prêmio Presidente da República (BRZ-G1) winner Pay Off (by Turville).

Elluff and her siblings were produced from the English import Tuft (by the good English stakes winner Primera, by My Babu), whose half sister Ride (by Sovereign Path) is the dam of 1975 Hungerford Stakes (ENG-G3) winner Court Chad (by St. Chad) and Group 3-placed stakes winner King’s Ride (by Rarity) and the second dam of German Group 3 winner Hoyer. Produced from the stakes-winning Ballymoss mare Turf (a half sister to stakes winner Tinder and to the important producer Beaver Street, both by My Babu), Tuft is also a half sister to Jeanie Duff (by Majestic Prince), dam of 1988 Italian co-champion 2-year-old filly Marina Duff (by Caerleon) and second dam of 1990 English champion 2-year-old male Mujtahid and Grade/Group 2 winners Just Happy and Sopran Mariduff. Another half sister to Tuft, Best Regalia (by Sharpen Up), is the dam of 1991 Long Look Handicap (USA-G2) winner Wait for the Lady (by Believe the Queen).

Fun facts
  • Roxinho, or purpleheart, is a hard, moisture-resistant wood that develops a distinct purple tinge after being cut and exposed to air. It is most often used in making musical instruments and in fine inlay work. The wood comes from trees of the genus Peltogyne, a group native to tropical South American rainforests.
