Seaside Attraction (USA)

March 20, 1987 – 1996

Seattle Slew (USA) x Kamar (CAN), by Key to the Mint (USA)

Family 14-c

The Kentucky Oaks (USA-G1) was the only stakes win for Seaside Attraction, but that victory plus her beautiful pedigree were enough to make her an extremely attractive broodmare prospect. She lived up to her credentials during a broodmare career cut short by her early death, producing four stakes winners (including a champion) from five foals.

Race record

12 starts, 4 wins, 1 second, 2 thirds, US$272,541

1990:
  • Won Kentucky Oaks (USA-G1, 9FD, Churchill Downs)
  • 2nd Churchill Downs Breeders' Cup Handicap (USA-G3, 8FD, Churchill Downs)
  • 3rd Acorn Stakes (USA-G1, 8FD, Belmont)
  • 3rd Beaumont Stakes (USA-G3, 7F+184ftD, Keeneland)

Assessments

Rated at 116 pounds on the Daily Racing Form's Free Handicap for American 3-year-old fillies of 1990, 14 pounds below champion Go for Wand.

As an individual

A muscular bay mare of nearly faultless conformation and temperament, Seaside Attraction handled off going well.

As a producer

Seaside Attraction produced five named foals, all of which started and won. Her important foals are as follow:
  • Red Carnival (1992, by Mr. Prospector) won the 1994 Hillsdown Cherry Hinton Stakes (ENG-G3). She produced 2006 Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp (FR-G1) winner Desert Lord (by Green Desert), 2005 Kelso Breeders' Cup Handicap (USA-G2) winner Funfair (by Singspiel) and multiple Group 3 winner Carnival Dancer (by Sadler's Wells).
  • Golden Attraction (1993, by Mr. Prospector) was the American champion juvenile filly of 1995 after winning three Grade 1 races that year. She is the dam of listed stakes winner Gold Trader (by Storm Cat) and stakes winner Return to Grace (by English Channel).
  • Cape Town (1995, by Seeking the Gold) won the 1998 Florida Derby (USA-G1). A disappointing stallion in the United States, he was exported to Brazil in 2009.
  • Cape Canaveral (1996, by Mr. Prospector) won the 1999 San Miguel Stakes (USA-G3). He made little headway as a stallion Kentucky and relocated to Alberta, Canada, in 2008.

Connections

Foaled in Kentucky, Seaside Attraction was bred by Warner L. Jones' Hermitage Farm Inc., Albert G. Clay, and Robert N. Clay. She was owned by William T. Young's Overbrook Farm, which purchased her for US$1.05 million as a weanling from the Warner Jones dispersal. She was trained by D. Wayne Lukas. She remained the property of Overbrook Farm throughout her broodmare career and was buried at the farm after her death.

Pedigree notes

Seaside Attraction is inbred 5x4 to two-time American champion sire and eight-time American champion broodmare sire Princequillo. She is a half sister to 1984 Canadian champion 3-year-old male Key to the Moon (by Wajima) and to multiple Grade 1 winner Gorgeous (by Seattle Slew's champion son Slew o' Gold), dam of French listed stakes winner Stunning (by Nureyev); second dam of 2016 Venezuelan champion older female La Alpujarra, 2010 Falmouth Stakes (ENG-G1) winner Music Show, 2009 Ruffian Handicap (USA-G1) winner Swift Temper, and Grade 2 winner Sarach; and third dam of multiple Grade 1 winner Turbulent Descent, Argentine Group 2 winner Galan de Cine, Italian Group 3 winner Masham Star, and Grade 3 winner All Included.

Seaside Attraction is also a half sister to 1986 Princess Margaret Stakes (ENG-G3) winner Hiaam (by Alydar), dam of listed stakes winners Munnaya (by Nijinsky II), Sheer Reason (by Danzig), and Mall Queen (by Sheikh Albadou) and second dam of multiple Grade 1 winner Alpha. In addition, Seaside Attraction is a half sister to Forlis Key (by Forli), dam of stakes winner Clever Return (by Clever Trick) and third dam of Grade 2 winner Mint Lane, and to Wilayif (by Danzig), dam of French Group 3 winner Morning Pride (by Machiavellian) and second dam of multiple Grade 1 winner Flashing. Finally, Seaside Attraction is a half sister to Jood (by Nijinsky II), dam of 2001 European Horse of the Year Fantastic Light (by Rahy) and listed stakes winner Hi Dubai (by Rahy), second dam of Australian Group 2 winner Tarquin, and third dam of 2013 B.T.C. Cup Stakes (AUS-G1) winner Your Song and Argentine Group 2 winner Drive Joy.

Seaside Attraction and her siblings were produced from Kamar, the 1990 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year. Canada's 1979 champion 3-year-old filly during her own racing days, Kamar is a full sister to 1986 Apple Blossom Handicap (USA-G1) winner Love Smitten and a half sister to Grade 3 winner Stellarette (by Tentam) and listed stakes winner Dancing on a Cloud (by Nijinsky II), all successful broodmares in their own rights. Their dam, Square Angel (by Quadrangle), was the 1973 Canadian champion 3-year-old filly and was produced from the stakes-winning Nearctic mare Nangela. Square Angel's family is one of the most successful modern branches of the family of the great English race mare Pretty Polly.

Fun facts:
  • Seaside Attraction was the fourth of five Kentucky Oaks winners for trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who had previously trained Blush With Pride (1982), Lucky Lucky Lucky (1984), and Open Mind (1989). He later trained Secret Oath (2022) to win the lilies, tying Woody Stephens's record of five Oaks winners.
