Senta’s Dream (GB)

March 28, 2004 – c. 2019

Danehill (USA) x Starine (FR), by Mendocino (USA)

Family 4-i

Although she was a daughter of the great sire Danehill and 2002 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (USA-G1) winner Starine, Senta’s Dream never raced and had an indifferent produce record at the time she was offered at the 2013 Newmarket December sales. Taken for 14,000 guineas by Aidan and Anne Marie O’Brien for their Whisperview Trading breeding operation, she proved a rare bargain as she produced three Grade/Group 1 winners, including two Breeders’ Cup winners, for her new owners. It remains to be seen whether any of her daughters will breed on.

As an individual

A bay mare; no further information available.

As a producer

Senta’s Dream produced eight named foals. All eight started and five were winners. Her important foals are as follow:
  • Iridessa (2016, by Ruler of the World) won four Grade/Group 1 stakes races including the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf. She produced five foals before her death in August 2025 but has yet to be represented by a winner as of December 12, 2025.
  • Order of Australia (2017, by Australia) won the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Mile (USA-G1). He was sent to India to enter stud there in 2024.
  • Santa Barbara (2018, by Camelot) won the 2021 Belmont Oaks Invitational Stakes (USA-G1) and Beverly D. Stakes (USA-G1) but died from complications of a fractured pelvis in September 2021.

Connections

Senta’s Dream was bred by Newsells Park Stud. She sold for 300,000 euros to trainer Urs Suter at the 2005 Deaville yearling sale, but she later returned to the ownership of Newsells Park Stud. In 2013, she was purchased from the Tattersalls December sales at Newmarket for 14,000 guineas for Whisperview Trading Ltd. Santa Barbara was her last registered foal.

Pedigree notes

Senta’s Dream is inbred 4x5 to the breed-shaping sire Northern Dancer, the 1964 Canadian Horse of the Year and American champion 3-year-old male. She was the only foal of importance produced from Starine, who won the 2001 Matriarch Stakes (USA-G1) and the 2002 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf. Sired by French stakes winner Mendocino (by Theatrical), Starine is a half sister to Group 3-placed Pearlescence (by Pleasantly Perfect), whose maternal grandson Sovereign Spirit was the 2004 champion stayer in Bahrain.

Starine, in turn, is out of Grisonnante (by the important French sire Kaldoun, by Caro). Grissonnante’s dam, Lady Cherie, was unplaced in two tries. A daughter of Sir Gaylord, she was produced from Cherie Royale (by 1961 English Horse of the Year Right Royal V). The next dam in the tail-female line of Senta’s Dream is 1966 Prix La Camargo winner Cherie Noire, by 1954 Prix Maurice de Nieuil winner Soleil Levant out of 1959 Prix de Malleret winner Mefair, by 1949 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud winner Medium.

Fun facts
  • One of six mares to have produced two Breeders’ Cup winners, Senta’s Dream is the second mare to have produced horses that won Breeders’ Cup races in back-to-back years. The first was Leslie’s Lady, whose daughter Beholder won the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Distaff (USA-G1) and was followed by Mendelssohn in the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (USA-G1).
