A modestly talented race mare, Shenanigans found her true niche as a broodmare. She would have had a place in Thoroughbred history had she produced only the great Ruffian, but she was also responsible for an important stallion in Icecapade and a first-rate producer in Laughter during a broodmare career shortened by a fatal paddock accident.
Race record
22 starts, 3 wins, 1 second, 6 thirds, US$18,120
1965:
As an individual
A well-made, attractive gray mare, Shenanigans had rather long cannons. She developed a filling in a knee after her juvenile season, but it is unknown whether this affected her later racing career.
As a producer
The 1975 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year and a Reine-de-Course as designated by pedigree analyst Ellen Parker, Shenanigans produced six named foals. All started and won. Her important foals were as follow:
Connections
Foaled in Maryland, Shenanigans was bred and owned by Stuart S. Janney, Jr., and raced in the name of his Locust Hill Farm. After undergoing successful abdominal surgery in May 1977, Shenanigans fell while coming out of anesthesia and broke both forelegs, necessitating her humane destruction.
Pedigree notes
Shenanigans is outcrossed through five generations. She is a stakes-placed half sister to multiple stakes winners The Irishman (by Nasrullah) and Knocklofty (by Parnassus). She is also a half sister to Blarney Castle (by Nasrullah), third dam of two-time French champion Green Forest and French Group 3 winner Green Paradise; to Irish Trip (by Globemaster), dam of multiple stakes winner Dungarven (by Triple Bend); and to Longford (by Menow), dam of 1963 American champion 2-year-old filly Castle Forbes (by Tulyar). Through Castle Forbes, Longford is the second dam of 1969 Hopeful Stakes winner Irish Castle and 1974 Matron Stakes (USA-G1) winner Alpine Lass, both by Bold Ruler. Another half sister to Shenanigans, Leix (by Turn-to), produced stakes winners Irish County (by Swaps), Irish Chief (by Tulyar) and Ruff Mark (by Master Hand) and is the second dam of four stakes winners including Grade 2 winner Pok Ta Pok. In addition, Shenanigans is a half sister to Castle Hyde (by Tulyar), dam of stakes winner Ramhyde (by Rambunctious) and third dam of 1992 Preakness Stakes (USA-G1) winner Pine Bluff and 1987 Arkansas Derby (USA-G1) winner Demons Begone.
Shenanigans is out of Bold Irish, a half sister to 1935 Fashion Stakes winner Mag Mell (by Pompey; dam of 1944 Demoiselle Stakes winner Druimuir, by Snark), 1940 Pimlico Futurity winner Bold Irishman (by Sir Gallahad III) and 1942 Interborough Handicap winner Eire (by Hard Tack). Produced from 1930 Gazelle Stakes winner Erin (by Transmute), Bold Irish is also a half sister to Ballyshannon (by Mad Hatter), second dam of 1958 Del Mar Handicap winner Noredski, and to stakes-placed Bransome (by Royal Minstrel), dam of multiple stakes winner Stronghold (by Hard Tack) and second dam of 1954 American champion 2-year-old filly High Voltage.

- 2nd Maryland Futurity (USA, 7FD, Laurel)
As an individual

As a producer
The 1975 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year and a Reine-de-Course as designated by pedigree analyst Ellen Parker, Shenanigans produced six named foals. All started and won. Her important foals were as follow:
- Icecapade (1969, by Nearctic) proved a fast sprinter-miler and won seven stakes races including the 1973 William DuPont Jr, Handicap (USA-G2) and Nassau County Handicap (USA-G3). At stud, he sired 73 stakes winners from 583 foals including the inaugural Breeders' Cup Classic (USA-G1) winner, Wild Again, and 1990 Canadian Triple Crown winner Izvestia.
- Laughter (1970, by Bold Ruler) won four of 12 races and was just below stakes class. She is the dam of five stakes winners including 1988 Wood Memorial Invitational Stakes (USA-G1) winner Private Terms (by Private Account) and Grade 3 winners Blue Ensign (by Hoist the Flag) and Light Spirits (by Majestic Light). She is also the second dam of six stakes winners including 1998 Travers Stakes (USA-G1) winner Coronado's Quest, Grade 2 winner Mesabi Maiden and Grade 3 winner Warning Glance. Her more distant descendants include 2013 Kentucky Derby (USA-G1) winner Orb.
- On to Glory (1971, by Bold Lad) won two of seven starts and was second in four more but did not earn black type. He was a useful sire, getting 32 stakes winners from 558 foals.
- Ruffian (1972, by Reviewer) was the American champion filly of her age in both 1974 and 1975. After running undefeated through her first 10 starts, including a sweep of the New York Triple Tiara series, she suffered a fatal breakdown in a match race against Kentucky Derby (USA-G1) winner Foolish Pleasure. She is still regarded by many as the best American filly or mare of the 20th century.
- Buckfinder (1974, by Buckpasser) won the 1978 William DuPont Jr. Handicap (USA-G2). He was a moderate sire, getting 22 stakes winners from 602 foals.
