Family 5-f
The last champion sired by 1990 American champion 3-year-old male Unbridled, Smuggler earned her title in a moderate year for 3-year-old fillies. The lack of depth in the division was underscored by the fact that a campaign of three victories in just four starts was enough to earn the laurels, but Smuggler's easy defeat of her main rivals in the Coaching Club American Oaks (USA-G1) was enough to decide the issue. Smuggler's record as a broodmare has been disappointing.

Honors
Eclipse Award, American champion 3-year-old filly (2005)
Assessments
Rated at 103 pounds on the Experimental Free Handicap for American juvenile fillies of 2004, 21 pounds below champion Sweet Catomine.
As an individual
A modestly-sized bay, Smuggler had the same problem with narrower than normal back vertebrae that had marked her dam Inside Information. She also had the habit of waiting on other horses after making the lead and could not match her dam's sharp turn of foot, although she could sustain a strong bid over a distance. She missed the second half of her 3-year-old season due to a lung abscess and a colic episode and was officially retired in September 2006 due to cannon bone bruising in a hind leg.
As a producer
Smuggler produced seven named foals, of which six started and four won. None of Smuggler's foals have either won a stakes or produced a stakes winner.
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Smuggler was bred and owned by Ogden Mills Phipps, who raced the filly in the name of his Phipps Stable. She was trained by Claude “Shug” McGaughey. She died from complications of foaling in 2015; her War Front colt also died. Smuggler was buried at Claiborne Farm's Marchmont division.

Fun facts
- According to owner Ogden Mills Phipps, he sent Inside Information to Unbridled for the mating that produced Smuggler in hopes that the stallion's greater size and bone would help correct Inside Information's fault of narrow vertebrae. It is worth noting that of Inside Information's three winners, two—Smuggler and her full brother Manipulator—are by Unbridled.
- Smuggler received 177 of a possible 262 votes for the 2005 Eclipse Award as American champion 3-year-old filly. 10 fillies received at least one vote for the championship.
