Snowflake (USA)

1927 – 1951

Mad Hatter (USA) x Snowdrop (GB), by Cicero (GB)

Family 16-g

In a year that lacked a true standout among its sophomore fillies, most observers ranked Snowflake at the top along with Alcibiades. Unlike Alcibiades, Snowflake did not go on to greater glory as a broodmare, enjoying only modest success.

Race record

30 starts, 7 wins, 1 second, 6 thirds, US$58,865

1929:
  • Won Endurance Handicap (USA, 8.5FD, Bowie)
  • 3rd Spinaway Stakes (USA, 6FD, Saratoga)
  • 3rd Hiawatha Handicap (USA)

1930:
  • Won Coaching Club American Oaks (USA, 11FD, Belmont)
  • Won Illinois Oaks (USA, 9FD, Washington Park)
  • Won Ladies' Handicap (USA, 8FD, Belmont)
  • 3rd Preakness Stakes (USA, 9.5FD, Pimlico)
  • 3rd Pimlico Oaks (USA, 8f+70fD, Pimlico)

Honors

American co-champion 3-year-old filly (1930)

As an individual

A chestnut mare; no further information available.

As a producer

Snowflake produced eight named foals. All started and seven won. Her important foals were as follow:
  • Snow Flurry (1935, by Swift and Sure) is the second dam of 1961 Michigan Derby winner Endsville and the third dam of Grade I-placed multiple Grade III winner Hope of Glory.
  • Snow Air (1941, by Ariel) is the second dam of multiple Canadian stakes winner Shipmate and third dam of Grade III winner Lady Dom Alaric and dual Jamaican Classic winner Poetry in Motion.
  • Saddle Tramp (1949, by Vezzano) won the 1953 Atlantic City Turf Handicap. He was of no importance as a sire.

Connections

Foaled in Kentucky, Snowflake was bred and owned by Walter J. Salmon's Mereworth Stud and remained the property of Mereworth Stud throughout her life. She was trained by Jack R. Pryce.

Pedigree notes

Snowflake is inbred 4x5 to 1880 Derby Stakes winner Bend Or and 5x5 to nine-time English champion sire St. Simon. She was produced from Snowdrop, a daughter of 1905 Derby Stakes winner Cicero who was inbred 2x3 to Cicero's sire, 1899 Ascot Gold Cup winner and two-time English champion sire Cyllene. (Cyllene was also a champion sire in Argentina.)

Snowdrop was produced from the Roi Herode mare Snowcapt, whose other produce included stakes winners Snowy (by Tryster), Snowwhite (by Ladkin), Air Pilot (by Swift and Sure) and Eastport (by Swift and Sure). Snowy, in turn, produced juvenile stakes winner Winter Sport (by Display). A half sister to the minor English stakes winner Reine de Neige (by Roi Herode's grandson Tetratema; second dam of 1934 Hopeful Stakes winner Psychic Bid), Snowcapt was produced from the Cyllene mare Snowflight.
