Sovereign Dancer was bred to be a champion but was anything but on the race course in France and North America. Given a chance at stud because of his pedigree, he redeemed himself, siring two American Classic winners, an American champion and a multiple European highweight as the highlights of a very good stud record.

A handsome, well-balanced bay horse, Sovereign Dancer possessed a straighter hind leg than many of the Northern Dancer tribe and had the sloping croup that marked many of Nasrullah's descendants. He stood 16 hands.

According to records kept by The Jockey Club, Sovereign Dancer sired 387 winners (64.5%) and 51 stakes winners (8.6%) from 592 named foals. The Blood-Horse credits Sovereign Dancer with 56 stakes winners (9.5%).

Foaled in Kentucky, Sovereign Dancer was bred by Ogden Mills Phipps. He was owned by Mrs. Alec Head. Following his racing career, Sovereign Dancer entered stud in 1980 at The Oaks in Ocala, Florida. He moved to Lane's End Farm in Kentucky in 1986 and was buried at the farm after his death from laminitis in 1994.
