American Family 1
The best American juvenile of 2005, Stevie Wonderboy was a poster boy for fans of the “Rasmussen Factor” (inbreeding to a superior female within five generations) as his pedigree carried a 3x3 cross to 1992 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year Weekend Surprise through her Classic-winning sons A.P. Indy and Summer Squall. Unfortunately, this translated to neither ongoing success at age 3 nor a successful stud career. He was somewhat more successful in Chile than in North America and relocated permanently to Chile in 2013.
Race record
6 starts, 3 wins, 2 seconds, 1 third, US$1,058,940

Assessments
Highweighted at 126 pounds on the Experimental Free Handicap for American juvenile males of 2005, 2 pounds above second-rated First Samurai.
As an individual
A chestnut horse standing 16.2 hands, Stevie Wonderboy possessed a powerful turn of foot and did his best running while coming from off the pace. He suffered a condylar fracture during a workout after his first race back at 3. It was initially thought that he would be able to return to racing, but a knee chip followed by quarter cracks ended his racing career. He had a laid-back, friendly disposition.
As a stallion
According to statistics compiled by The Jockey Club, Stevie Wonderboy sired 249 winners (57.4%) and 11 stakes winners (2.5%) from 434 named foals of racing age.
Notable progeny
Peso Veinte (CHI)
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Stevie Wonderboy was bred by John Gunther, Tony Holmes, and Walter Zent. A $100,000 purchase from the 2005 Fasig-Tipton February sale of 2-year-olds in training, he was owned by the Merv Griffin Ranch Company and was trained by Doug O'Neill. He was ridden to his Breeders’ Cup Juvenile win by Garrett Gomez. He entered stud in Kentucky in 2008 at Airdrie Stud, where he stood through the 2013 Northern Hemisphere season. Following the breeding season, he relocated permanently to Haras Don Alberto, Chile, where he had shuttled in 2008. His last known foals were registered in 2019.
Pedigree notes
Stevie Wonderboy is inbred 3x3 to Weekend Surprise and 5x5 to the important sire Turn-to. He is a half brother to 2010 Prestige Stakes (ENG-G3) winner Theysken’s Theory (by Bernardini) and to Summer Scene (by Belong to Me), second dam of multiple Grade 2 winner Somelikeithotbrown.
Heat Lightning, the dam of Stevie Wonderboy, failed to win in 13 starts. She is a half sister to 1989 Citation Handicap (USA-G2) winner Fair Judgment (by Alleged) and to stakes winner Linda Coqueta (by Rubiano). Heat Lightning is also a half sister to Spend a Dream (by Spend a Buck), dam of restricted stakes winner Clever Tish (by Clever Trick), second dam of 2015 American champion turf male Big Blue Kitten, and third dam of three-time Indian champion older horse Juliette. In addition, Heat Lightning is a half sister to Meli Magic (by Sovereign Dancer), dam of restricted stakes winner Gigi’s Magic (by Allen’s Prospect), and to Long Silence (by Alleged), dam of listed stakes winners Dake (by Gulch) and Wood Sprite (by Woodman), second dam of multiple Grade 3 winner Ailalea, and third dam of 2018 Peruvian champion 3-year-old filly Juliana.
Heat Lightning and her siblings are out of Mystical Mood (by Roberto), who won the 1981 Schuylerville Stakes (USA-G3) and was Grade 1-placed twice as a juvenile. Produced from Grade 1-placed stakes winner Mystery Mood (by 1969 Washington Park Handicap winner Night Invader), a half sister to 1972 Arlington-Washington Lassie Stakes winner Natural Sound (by Olden Times), Mystical Mood is a full sister to Mazzei Mood, dam of AAMI Australia Cup (AUS-G1) winner Istidaad (by Chief’s Crown) and English listed stakes winner Amwag (by El Gran Senor). Mystical Mood is also a half sister to 1990 Osterman-Pokal (GER-G3) winner Maximilian (by Mr. Prospector), to Grade 3-placed French listed stakes winner Mythical Hunter (by Gone West), and to Spellcast (by Fappiano), dam of multiple listed stakes winner Short Stay (by Citidancer) and multiple steeplechase stakes winner Indispensable (by Mane Minister).
