"GENETIC GEM"
Produced from a family that had been in a slump for several generations, Stick to Beauty rose above that background and became one of only six stakes winners sired by the stakes-winning Round Table horse Illustrious. As a broodmare, she became a fountainhead of the class she had hinted at during her racing career, producing four stakes winners (one of them a champion) and several daughters that did not earn black type but made contributions as broodmares.
Race record

Connections
Foaled in Florida, Stick to Beauty was bred and owned by Georgia Hofmann, who had purchased her dam for US$8,000 at the 1972 Keeneland fall mixed sale. The filly was trained by James Picou and was ridden in both her black-type races by Ron Turcotte. She was sold for US$1.1 million at the 1984 Keeneland November mixed sale, in foal to Fappiano, and produced her next three foals for Due Process Stable (the last one bred in partnership with JJG Partners). Her next two foals, daughters of Alydar, were bred by Frank Cihak and Calumet Farm, respectively, before the mare, in foal to Criminal Type, went back to Keeneland November in 1991. There, she sold for US$225,000 back to Georgia Hofmann, who bred her final six foals. Stick to Beauty died in June 2003 and was buried at Taylor Made Farm.
Pedigree notes
Stick to Beauty is inbred 4x5 to two-time English/Irish champion sire Nearco, an unbeaten champion on the race course. A half sister to stakes winner Be a Rullah (by Raise a Native), Stick to Beauty is out of the unraced Hail to Reason mare Hail to Beauty, whose half sister Primper (by Art Market) produced 1978 Mother Goose Stakes (USA-G1) winner Caesar’s Wish (by Proudest Roman). The next dam in the tail-female line, Lipstick (by Stymie), is a full sister to Pretty Ways, whose son Understanding (by Promised Land; winner of the 1966 Stuyvesant Handicap) is the broodmare sire of the great racer and sire Sunday Silence.
Lipstick and Pretty Ways were produced from Pretty Jo (by Bull Lea), a half sister to stakes winners Bertie S. (by Thanksgiving), Incoming (by Ladysman), No Sir (by Sortie), and Little Lie (by Sickle). The last-named mare produced 1946 Discovery Handicap winner Mighty Story (by Mahmoud) and five-time stakes winner Cape Cod (by Bostonian). Pretty Jo’s dam Fib, a non-winner, was sired by the good stakes winner Westy Hogan out of the Jack Atkin mare Hyperbole, whose granddam Home Rule is a full sister to 1908 Brooklyn Handicap winner and 1921 American champion sire Celt.
