Summer Squall (USA) x Here I Go (USA), by Mr. Prospector (USA)
Family 10-a
Summerly did not have the explosive speed of a sprinter, but against two-turn runners she often had enough speed to dictate the pace. When she could, she was always dangerous, and she proved one of the better fillies in a relatively weak group of American sophomore females. She was disappointing as a 4-year-old and has underperformed expectations as a broodmare thus far.
Race record
14 starts, 6 wins, 1 second, 2 thirds, US$907,652
2004:
2005:
2006:
Honors
Third in Eclipse Award balloting for American champion 3-year-old filly (2005)
As an individual
A well-made, feminine chestnut mare with the build of a router, Summerly had a kind nature. She possessed a high level of natural speed and typically ran on or close to the lead.
As a producer
Summerly produced 12 named foals. As of February 2023, nine have started and five have won. Her most significant foal thus far is Group 3-placed Allez Marie (by Unbridled’s Song), dam of stakes winner Workaholic (by Sky Mesa).
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Summerly was bred by Tom Van Meter and Michael Lowenbaum. She was owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds, which purchased her for US$410,000 from the 2003 Keeneland September yearling sale. She was trained by Steve Asmussen and was ridden to her Kentucky Oaks score by Jerry Bailey. She was purchased by WinStar for US$3.3 million at the 2006 Keeneland November mixed sale and finished fourth in the Falls City Handicap (USA-G2), her final race, under their ownership. Summerly died of colic in the summer of 2021.
Pedigree notes
Summerly is inbred 5x4 to two-time American Horse of the Year Native Dancer and 5x5 to five-time American champion sire Nasrullah. She is a half sister to Touch Here (by Touch Gold), second dam of Grade 3 winner Royal Approval.
Here I Go, the dam of Summerly, placed in two Grade 3 races. She is out of the unraced Seattle Slew mare Shufflin n Seattle, a half sister to multiple stakes winner Goodness (by Hennessy). The next dam in Summerly’s tail-female line is Grade 3 winner Darby Shuffle (by Darby Creek Road), a half sister to Group 1-placed listed stakes winner Beat All (by Dynaformer).
Darby Shuffle was produced from the stakes-placed Distinctive mare Spirited Missus, who is a half sister to multiple stakes winner Behaving Lady (by Ambehaving), dam of multiple listed stakes winner Behaving Dancer (by Green Dancer). Produced from the winning Bolero mare Missus Beau, Spirited Missus is also a half sister to Swift Destiny (by Ambehaving), dam of stakes winner Always Be Mine (by Kris S.); to Miss Tio (by Tio Viejo), dam of stakes winner Miss Adie Irene (by Our Michael); and to Warren’s Missus (by Jolly Warren), dam of 1984 Top Flight Handicap (USA-G1) winner Sweet Missus (by Honey Jay).
