A daughter of 1911 Two Thousand Guineas and Derby Stakes winner Sunstar, Sunbonnet was talented enough to be considered the top American 3-year-old filly in a less than outstanding division. Records of her broodmare career are patchy, but she does not seem to have been particularly successful and has had no long-term influence.

American champion 3-year-old filly (1917)
As an individual
A bay mare, Sunbonnet was considered "one of the loveliest daughters of the Derby winner Sunstar" according to the Cincinnati Enquirer of August 19, 1928. She bowed a tendon while in training in May 1918, ending her racing career.
As a producer
Sunbonnet produced one American-bred foal, the Uncle colt Dominator, who was gelded and ended up running in races at the county fair level in California. She bred several more foals in France through 1932 before disappearing from French records. Her only foal to achieve any prominence was the Maintenon colt Sun God II, whose biggest wins were in the Grand Prix de Nice in France and in the Montezuma Handicap at Tijuana..
Connections
Sunbonnet was bred in England by Jack Joel. She was imported to the United States and raced in the colors of A. K. Macomber. She was sent to France in 1919, covered by Friar Rock, and disappears from French records after 1932.
Pedigree notes
Sunbonnet is inbred 5x4 to 1876 English champion sire Lord Clifden, winner of the 1863 St. Leger Stakes. She is a half sister to Merriment II (by Sunstar's sire Sundridge), dam of juvenile stakes winner Merry Princess (by Spanish Prince II). Merry Princess, in turn, is the dam of Cuban stakes winner Campanini (by Campfire) and multiple stakes winner Gallant Prince (by Gallant Fox). Sunbonnet is also a half sister to Wilful Maid (by Sundridge), whose son Prince Pal sired the hardy 1931 Preakness Stakes winner Mate and whose daughter Impetuous (by Peter Quince) produced the good juvenile Flight of Time (by Hourless).
Marian Hood, the dam of Sunbonnet, is a half sister to the good English stakes winner and five-time English champion sire Polymelus (by Cyllene), to English stakes winner Ercildoune (by Kendal), and to Grafton (by Galopin), who never raced but was champion sire in Australia four times. Marian Hood is also a half sister to Lady Cynosure, third dam of 1940 Derby Stakes winner Pont l'Eveque.
Marian Hood is out of the Hampton mare Maid Marian, a half sister to multiple English Classic winners Memoir and La Fleche (both by St. Simon). The last-named mare is the dam of stakes winners Baroness La Fleche (by Ladas), dam of One Thousand Guineas winner and influential producer Cinna (by Polymelus), and John o' Gaunt (by Isinglass), sire of 1910 St. Leger Stakes winner and 1923 English leading sire Swynford. Maid Marian's dam Quiver (by Toxophilite) also produced juvenile stakes winner Satchel (by Galopin), dam of the good juvenile The Prize (by Bend Or) and second dam of Sain, a sire of some significance in the United States.
Books and media
Sunbonnet is profiled in Chapter 4 of Avalyn Hunter's American Classic Pedigrees 1914-2002 (2003, Eclipse Press).
