Super Concorde was hailed as a potential superhorse after a brilliant juvenile season in France but was unable to deliver on that promise at 3 and retired with a deeply tarnished reputation. Like his sire, Bold Reasoning, and paternal grandsire, Boldnesian, he had a relatively short stud career. He was not outstanding as a sire of winners but still managed to continue the Bold Ruler male line in Europe thanks to his son Big Shuffle, who led the German general sire list seven times and sired four-time German sire leader Areion.

Honors
French champion 2-year-old male (1977)
Assessments
Highweighted at 132 pounds on the Handicap Optional for French 2-year-old males of 1977, 2 pounds above Acamas.
Rated at 128 pounds by Timeform as a juvenile, two pounds below the top European juvenile, Try My Best.
Rated at 123 pounds by Timeform as a 3-year-old, 15 pounds below highweighted Alleged (a 4-year-old).
Rated 13 pounds below highweighted Ile de Bourbon on the 1978 International Classification for European 3-year-olds.
Rated at 134 pounds on the 1978 International Free Handicap for European 3-year-olds over 6.5 to 10 furlongs, 9 pounds below highweighted Swiss Maid.
As an individual
A handsome, muscular, well-balanced dark bay or brown horse with excellent overall conformation, Super Concorde stood 16.1 hands. By the beginning of his 3-year-old season, he had become a difficult horse to train. He preferred to run on or close to the lead and was at his best over footing with some give in it.
As a stallion
According to records maintained by The Jockey Club, Super Concorde sired 216 winners (59.0%) and 18 stakes winners (4.9%) from 366 named foals of racing age.
Notable progeny
Big Shuffle (USA), Croeso (USA), Super May (USA)
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Super Concorde was bred by Nelson Bunker Hunt. Sold at auction for US$200,000 as a yearling; he was owned by Walter Haefner. He was trained by François Boutin. After Super Concorde’s racing career ended, Hunt repurchased him. Super Concorde entered stud in Kentucky in 1979 at Gainesway. He died in 1987.
Pedigree notes
Super Concorde is outcrossed through five generations. He was produced from multiple French stakes winner Prime Abord, whose sire Primera (by My Babu) won two editions of the Princess of Wales’s Stakes at Newmarket.
Prime Abord is a half sister to 1971 Test Stakes winner Lucky Traveler (by Derring-Do). Their dam, Homeward Bound (by 1949 English champion older male Alycidon), won the 1964 Oaks Stakes and is a half sister to the good English handicapper Chalk Stream (by Midas II). Homeward Bound is also a half sister to stakes-placed Morsgail (by Rockefella), dam of English stakes winner My Audrey (by Pall Mall).
Homeward Bound and her siblings are out of stakes-placed Sabie River, whose sire Signal Light (by Pharos) won the 1939 Craven Stakes. The next dam in Super Concorde’s tail-female lineage, Amorcille, is by the stakes-winning stayer Columcille out of English stakes winner Amorelle, by 1915 July Cup winner Volta.

Fun facts
- The Concorde was a supersonic passenger aircraft which was in commercial service in 1976-2003. Capable of reaching a maximum speed of 1,354 miles per hour, Concordes set several speed records for airliners but proved too expensive to build and operate to be profitable, leading to their being taken out of production.
- Prime Abord, the dam of Super Concorde, had a club foot and was reportedly acquired by Hunt only because she was given a hasty inspection due to a snowstorm and the defect was missed.
