Family 8-d
Although Tapizar had a pedigree with the potential for classic stamina, what he turned out to be was essentially a miler. He scored his biggest career win in the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (USA-G1) before retiring to stud, where he did not particularly distinguish himself except as the sire of two-time American champion Monomoy Girl.

Assessments
Rated at 117 pounds on the 2012 World’s Best Racehorse Rankings for his performance in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, 23 pounds below overall highweight Frankel (the European Horse of the Year) and 8 pounds below Fort Larned, who earned the top rating for a male on dirt with his win in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (USA-G1).
As an individual
A powerfully built, muscular bay horse with good bone who stood 16.1 hands, Tapizar was slightly short-legged and short-necked in relation to his height and length, respectively. After running fifth in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (USA-G2) (his next start after his Sham Stakes win), he spent the remainder of his 3-year-old season on the sidelines due to a knee chip and had another layoff lasting more than four months during his 4-year-old season. Like many of Tapit’s progeny, he could be headstrong. He was a fluent mover at racing speed.
As a stallion
As of December 18, 2024, Tapizar has sired 17 stakes winners from 546 named foals of racing age according to records maintained by The Jockey Club.
Notable progeny
Bullof Wall Street (USA), Monomoy Girl (USA)
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Tapizar was bred and owned by Ron Winchell’s Winchell Thoroughbreds. He was trained by Steve Asmussen and was ridden to his Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile score by Corey Nakatani. Lexington-based Gainesway Farm purchased an interest in him following his Breeders; Cup Dirt Mile win, and he entered stud at Gainesway in 2013. Tapizar was sold for export to Japan’s Yushun Stallion Station in late 2020 but before he could be shipped was euthanized due to injuries suffered in a stall accident.
