Teddy's racing career took place during the disruptions caused by World War I, and as a result his merit is difficult to assess. Nonetheless, most racing historians rate him as the best 3-year-old of 1916 in both France and Spain. The merit of his stud career is much less ambiguous, as Teddy became a notable sire in both Europe and the United States and founded a sire line that persisted into the late 20th century. But had he done no more than sire the great foundation mare La Troienne, he would be well worth remembering.

As an individual
A bay horse, Teddy stood slightly over 16 hands. He was a full-bodied and well-balanced horse with strong shoulders, forearms, and hindquarters. His cannons were short but a bit light on bone. He was a bit over at the knees, a trait characteristic of many of the progeny of his maternal grandsire, Bay Ronald.
As a stallion
Teddy led the French general sire list in 1923 and ranked among the top 10 French general sires on eight other occasions, including runner-up finishes in 1926, 1928 and 1932. He ranked second on the Italian general sire list in 1929 and led the French broodmare sire list in 1935, finishing among the top 10 French broodmare sires on another four occasions. According to Abram Hewitt in Sire Lines, he sired 67 stakes winners (18.8%) from 356 foals; most other sources credit Teddy with 65 stakes winners (18.3%). His progeny were typically good-sized with a long, strong forearm. According to Anne Peters' article on Teddy at the Thoroughbred Heritage website (www.tbheritage.com), they usually had powerful hindquarters, but Charles Hatton of the Daily Racing Form had a different opinion, describing Teddy's offspring as a bit light behind the saddle by American standards. Teddy is a Solid chef-de-race in the Roman dosage system.

Connections
Bred by Monsieur Edmond Blanc, Teddy was sold to Captain Jefferson Davis Cohn for 5,400 francs as a yearling. He was trained by Robert Denman. Teddy entered stud in 1918 in France and stood at Haras de Fitz James and Haras du Bois Roussel. In 1931, he was sold to F. Wallis Armstrong and Kenneth Gilpin and imported to the United States. He stood the remainder of his life at Gilpin's Kentmere Farm near Boyce, Virginia. Teddy died of an intestinal torsion in 1936.
Pedigree notes
Teddy is inbred 5x3 to 1880 Derby Stakes winner Bend Or and 5x4x5 to three-time English leading sire Galopin, winner of the 1875 Derby Stakes. His dam Rondeau was a useful stakes winner at 2, 3 and 4 but produced only four foals in a broodmare career dogged by reproductive problems. Her daughter Eugenique (a full sister to Teddy), is the ancestress of 2001 American Horse of the Year Point Given. Rondeau was produced from the Bend Or mare Doremi, whose dam Lady Emily is a daughter of 1863 Derby Stakes winner Macaroni.
