Tempera (USA)

March 12, 1999 – April 28, 2002

A.P. Indy USA) x Colour Chart (USA), by Mr. Prospector (USA)

Family 14-b

One of 22 stakes winners bred by putting A.P. Indy to daughters of Mr. Prospector, Tempera’s racing career was brilliant but brief. Crowned American champion 2-year-old filly on the strength of her victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (USA-G1), she was never out of the money in seven starts but came down with a fever on April 26, the Saturday before the 2002 Kentucky Oaks (USA-G1). Her condition rapidly developed into colitis and laminitis, and she was euthanized on April 28 after it became apparent that she would not recover.

Race record

7 starts, 3 wins, 2 seconds, 2 thirds, US$770,240

2001:
  • Won Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (USA-G1, 8.5FD, Belmont)
  • Won Sorrento Stakes (USA-G2, 6.5FD, Del Mar)
  • 3rd Del Mar Debutante Stakes (USA-G1, 7FD, DMR)

2002:
  • 2nd Melbourne Racing Club UAE Oaks (UAE, 1600mD, Nad al Sheba)
  • 2nd Shadwell Farms UAE One Thousand Guineas (UAE, 1800mD, Nad al Sheba)

Honors

Eclipse Award, American champion 2-year-old filly (2001)

Assessments

Highweighted at 123 pounds on the Experimental Free Handicap for American juvenile fillies of 2001, 2 pounds above second-rated Habibti.

As an individual

A dark bay or brown filly, Tempera was a smooth runner and could be placed as her jockey desired. She had a low-headed running style reminiscent of her sire.

Connections

Foaled in Kentucky, Tempera was bred by Darley Stud Management. She was owned by Godolphin Racing and was trained by Saeed bin Suroor. She was ridden to her win in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies by David Flores. She was euthanized due to laminitis and colic in April 2002 and was buried at Jonabell Farm, which had been bought the preceding year by Darley.

Pedigree notes

Tempera is inbred 5x4 to 1960 American champion juvenile male and 1970 American champion sire Hail to Reason. She is also inbred 5x5 to five-time American champion sire Nasrullah, also the English/Irish champion sire of 1951. She is a full sister to Interior Design, second dam of Grade 3 winner Fast Market. Tempera is also a half sister to multiple French Group 3 winner Equerry (by St. Jovite) and to French listed stakes winner Ecole d’Art (by Theatrical). In addition, she is a half sister to Joharra (by Kris S.), dam of 2010 Saudi Arabian champion older female Caprivi.

Tempera and her siblings were produced from 1990 CIGA Prix de l’Opera (FR-G2) winner Colour Chart, a full sister to Canadian stakes winner Always a Rainbow. Colour Chart is a half sister to three-time Canadian champion Rainbows for Life (by Lyphard), a champion sire in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. She is also a half sister to Barari (by Blushing Groom), dam of multiple Grade 1 winner White Heart (by Green Desert) and listed stakes winner Kind Regards (by Unfuwain). In addition, Colour Chart is a half sister to Rainbow’s Classic (by Regal Classic), dam of listed stakes winner Full Spectrum (by Broad Brush).

Colour Chart, in turn, is out of two-time Canadian champion Rainbow Connection (by Halo), whose full sister Rainbow Two is the second dam of multiple Grade 2 winner City to City. Produced from 1980 Canadian Broodmare of the Year Hangin Round (by Stage Door Johnny), Rainbow Connection is also a half sister to Hangin on a Star (by Vice Regent), who won the 1987 Breeders’ Stakes (third leg of the Canadian Triple Crown) and two other stakes races before becoming the dam of 1993 Canadian champion 2-year-old male Comet Shine (by Fappiano) and Misty Mission (by Miswaki), who took the third leg of the Canadian Triple Tiara, the Wonder Where Stakes, in 2000. Hangin on a Star is also the second dam of two-time Canadian champion Irish Mission and Grade 3 winners French Beret and Patience Game and the third dam of Grade 2 winners Mission of Joy and Time to Dazzle. Returning to Rainbow Connection, she is also a half sister to 1981 King Edward Gold Cup Handicap winner Mr. Macho (by Ruritania) and to Archdeacon (by Dancing Champ), winner of the 1983 Prince of Wales Stakes (second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown).

Fun facts
  • Tempera paints are composed of pigment mixed with a water-soluble binder medium, usually of a glutinous nature (such as egg yolk). Paints of this type were used to paint murals in ancient Egypt, Babylonia, Mycenaean Greece , and China. They remained popular until about the 15th century, when oil-based paints became more widely used, but some artists continue to prefer tempera today because of its smoother finish and greater durability. It is also commonly used for nontoxic paints for children.
