In 1961, a small bay colt was born on Windfields Farm in Ontario. Born to the union of an unproven sire and a mare with bad knees, he was offered for $25,000 as a yearling with no takers. As he aged, the only thing that grew much was his willful attitude. But the undersized, strong-willed colt had something else that couldn't be measured: the heart of a champion. Under the name of Northern Dancer, he became a legend.

The Kingmaker: How Northern Dancer Founded a Racing Dynasty follows Northern Dancer's story from the bloodlines that produced him through his racing career, culminating in his extraordinary stud career and its impact on the bloodstock industry. Students of pedigrees and racing history will find additional value in the appendices, which include tables showing all the stakes winners sired by Northern Dancer, all the stakes winners produced by Northern Dancer's daughters, and all the stakes winners sired by Northern Dancer's major sons.

After over a decade out of print, The Kingmaker was released through Lyons Press (
lyonspress.com) in an updated paperback edition on April 2, 2024. A Kindle version is also available through Amazon.
