The Manager raced in what was American racing’s lowest nadir since the Civil War, and as such he did not enjoy the wide acclaim given to racing’s great champions in other period. Nonetheless, he was generally considered the best American racehorse of 1912. He was a useful sire but did not get a son capable of succeeding him.

Pedigree notes
The Manager is outcrossed through five generations. He is a full brother to 1916 Cincinnati Trophy winner America, dam of 1923 California Derby winner Victoire (by Uncle). H is also a half brother to 1903 Latonia Derby winner Woodlake (by Candlemas) and stakes winners The Rival (by Halma) and Lady Anne (by Kinley Mack). In addition, he is a half brother to Understudy (by Star Ruby), dam of 1918 Adirondack Handicap winner Routledge (by Toddington), and to Belle of Ashland (by Ornament), whose granddaughter Glide won the 1923 Golden Rod Handicap and was the disqualified winner of the 1924 Kentucky Oaks.
The Manager and his siblings are out of Bracegirdle, a half sister to three good stakes winners in Kitty Clive (by Macduff), David Garrick (by Hanover), and Pegasus (by Hamburg). Their dam, Peg Woffington (by Longfellow), won the 1888 September Stakes and is a half sister to 1884 American champion 3-year-old filly Modesty (by War Dance), whose wins included that year’s Kentucky Oaks against fillies and the American Derby against males). Modesty produced the stakes winners Junius (by Longfellow) and Toah (by Bassetlaw) and is the third dam of 1915 Kentucky Derby winner and American Horse of the Year Regret, 1915 Futurity Stakes winner Thunderer, and 1916 Champagne Stakes winner Vivid. Returning to Peg Woffington, she is also a half sister to Vega (by War Dance), dam of stakes winner The Lioness (by Billet) and the second dam of five stakes winners including 1900 Carlton Stakes winner Standing. In addition, Peg Woffington is a half sister to Maid of Balgowan (by Hindoo), dam of 1900 Lawrence Realization winner Prince of Melbourne (by Bramble); to Elizabeth L. (by Woodlands), dam of the minor stakes winner Zuna (by Hamburg), second dam of 1919 Saratoga Special winner Golden Broom and 1921 Prix Robert Papin winner Zenoia, and third dam of 1917 King's Plate winner Ladder of Light; and to Cathay (by Onondaga), third dam of 1932 Cuban Derby winner Monk's First.
Peg Woffington was produced from the great 19th-century matron Ballet, whose dam Balloon (by Yorkshire) accomplished a remarkable feat by sweeping races at one-mile heats, two-mile heats, three-mile heats, and four-mile heats during the same race meeting. The female line traces back to an unnamed daughter of Janus (a paternal grandson of the Godolphin Arabian who also had considerable influence on the early background of the American Quarter Horse) and cannot be linked to any of the Bruce Lowe female families.
