The mating that produced The Yuvaraj was intended to blend the speed of his maternal grandsire Portlaw with the staying ability of Fairway, who had won the 1928 St. Leger Stakes. Like so many “fish-and-fowl” matings between stayers and sprinters, it failed to have the desired effect: The Yuvaraj was merely a sprinter, and not quite as good as Portlaw had been, either, though he was a consistent runner at his level. Nonetheless, his breeding gave him genetic diversity, which proved to be to his advantage after he was sent to Argentina for stallion duty. The Yuvaraj led the general sire list in his adopted country twice and continued his male line through his son Tatán, a winner of the Argentine Triple Crown.

A tall, rather long-cannoned bay horse, The Yuvaraj had a deep shoulder and strong hindquarters but was rather upright in front and sickle-hocked behind.
As a stallion
According to records kept by The Jockey Club, The Yuvaraj sired 49 winners (39.5%) and 17 stakes winners (13.7%) from 124 named foals; these records may not be complete. The Yuvaraj was an influence for speed and precocity but got major winners all over the distance spectrum.
