Viceregal (CAN)

April 4, 1966
– 1984

Northern Dancer (CAN) x Victoria Regina (CAN), by
Ménétrier (FR)

Family 10-c

An exceptionally handsome colt, Viceregal was Canada's Horse of the Year in 1968 and might have achieved still greater fame had he not damaged an ankle in a paddock accident as a yearling. The injury left him with chronic issues in the joint, eventually contributing to a breakdown as a 3-year-old. While commonly spoken of as a disappointing sire, he actually proved quite useful while standing in Canada, France, and Japan but had little lasting impact.

Race record

9 starts, 8 wins, 0 seconds, 1 thirds, US$118,399 (includes Canadian earnings)

1968:
  • Won Cup and Saucer Stakes (CAN, 8.5FT, Woodbine)
  • Won Summer Stakes (CAN, 8FT, Fort Erie)
  • Won Vandal Stakes (CAN, 6FD, Fort Erie)
  • Won Victoria Stakes (CAN, 5.5FD, Woodbine; equaled track record 1:04-2/5)
  • Won Clarendon Stakes (CAN, 7FD, Woodbine)
  • Won Colin Stakes (CAN, 6.5FD, Fort Erie)
  • Won Coronation Futurity (CAN, 9FD, Woodbine)

Honors
  • Canadian Horse of the Year (1968)
  • Canadian champion 2-year-old male (1968)

As an individual

A well-balanced chestnut horse, Viceregal had both power and beauty but was flawed by suspicious ankles. He preferred to come from behind in his races and demonstrated great courage and determination while racing. He fractured a coffin bone in one foot in his first start at 3 and was forced into retirement.

As a stallion

According to The Jockey Club, Viceregal sired 174 winners (50.3%) and 34 (9.8%) stakes winners from 346 named foals.

Notable progeny

Esclavo (FR), Red Rocket (FR), Ultima Ratio (FR)

Notable progeny of daughters

Beau Genius (CAN)

Connections

Foaled in Ontario, Viceregal was bred and owned by E. P. Taylor. He was trained by Gordon J. “Pete” McCann. He entered stud at Taylor's Windfields Farm near Oshawa, Ontario, in 1970. He was exported to France in 1974 and was sent on to Japan in 1980. He died in Japan in 1984.

Pedigree notes

Viceregal is inbred 5x5 to two-time English leading sire Phalaris and the important broodmare Scapa Flow through the full brothers Pharos and Fairway, both champion sires. He is a full brother to 13-time Canadian champion sire Vice Regent.

Viceregal's dam Victoria Regina was one of the best Canadian fillies of her crop and is a half sister to 1960 Canadian Horse of the Year Victoria Park (by Chop Chop), multiple juvenile stakes winner Bull Vic (by Bull Page), and 1965 Canadian Oaks winner Northern Queen (by Nearctic), dam of Irish stakes winner Buckstopper (by Buckpasser) and Canadian stakes winner Against All Flags (by Hoist the Flag). Victoria Regina is also a half sister to Victorian Dancer (by Northern Dancer), dam of English Group 3 winner Imperial March (by Forli), and to Victorian Heiress (by Northern Dancer), dam of 1983 Canadian champion 3-year-old filly Northern Blossom (by Snow Knight) and second dam of Grade 2 winner Explicit, Italian Group 2 winner Jape and Grade 3 winner Flying Victor.

Victoria Regina
and her siblings are out of of Victoriana (by the good Canadian stakes winner Windfields), a half sister to 1952 Canadian Horse of the Year Canadiana (by Chop Chop), dam of multiple Canadian stakes winner All Canadian (by Windfields) and second dam of French Group 2 winner Glenorum. Victoriana is also a half sister to multiple Canadian stakes winners Bennington (by Boswell) and Britannia (by Windfield's sire Bunty Lawless); the latter is the dam of Canadian stakes winner Myanna, by Chop Chop).

Victoriana, in turn, is out of Iribelle (by four-time Canadian champion sire Osiris II), a full sister to 1938 Canadian champion 3-year-old filly Mona Bell. Produced from the King James mare Belmona, Iribelle is also a full sister to Lady Mona, dam of multiple Canadian stakes winner Acadian (by Teddy Wrack).

Fun facts
  • Viceregal was offered for CAN$50,000 at E.P. Taylor's annual pre-priced yearling sale with no takers.
  • In his later years, E. P. Taylor voiced the opinion that Viceregal might have been the best horse he ever bred—high praise indeed considering that Taylor had also bred Northern Dancer himself as well as the great sire's champion sons Nijinsky II, The Minstrel and Storm Bird.
