Where You Lead was a good race mare in a brief career, winning a Group 3 event and placing in the historic Oaks Stakes (ENG-G1). She also did well as a broodmare, producing two Group-3 winning daughters. Both turned out to be important broodmares, and several other daughters made contributions to the Thoroughbred as well, leading to Where You Lead’s recognition as a Reine-de-Course.

Foaled in Kentucky, Where You Lead was bred by Leslie Combs II and Mrs. John Olin. She was a US$65,000 purchase from the 1971 Keeneland July yearling sale. She was owned by Alan Clore and trained by Vincent O’Brien. In 1981, she sold for US$1 million at the Keeneland November mixed sale, in foal to Foolish Pleasure, and was afterward owned by Swettenham Stud and Partners. She died in 1991.

Early Light, in turn, is out of Sun Mist (by 1921 Irish Two Thousand Guineas winner Soldennis), who was also the dam of 1938 Leicestershire Oaks winner Platinum (by Sansovino).
