In a crop that lacked a clear-cut leader, Ajo was about as good as any of the other top Argentine colts. He had little impact as a sire.

1909:
As an individual
A bay horse; no further information available.
As a stallion
Ajo was a much better racehorse than sire and left nothing of significance.
Connections
Ajo was bred by J. B. Zubiaurre's Haras Buenos Aires. He was later owned by Valerio Zubiaurre and then by Mrs. Damasia Saenz Valiente de Barreto. His last foals were registered in 1926.
Pedigree notes
Sired by 1893 Gran Premio Nacional winner Buenos Aires, Ajo is inbred 4x4 to 1851 St. Leger Stakes winner and two-time English champion sire Newminster, 5x5x5 to Newminster's sire Touchstone (a four-time English champion sire) and 5x5 to the tough stayer Rataplan, whose full brother Stockwell (a seven-time English sire champion) appears 3x4x4 in the pedigree of Ajo's dam. His dam Friolera won the 1898 Gran Premio Selección (Argentine Oaks) and is a half sister to 1889 Gran Premio Nacional winner Bolivar (by Earl Clifden). She is also a half sister to Rosa Bonheur (by Orbit), dam of 1908 Polla de Potrillas (Argentine One Thousand Guineas) and Gran Premio Selección winner Rubicela (by Acheron). Rubicela, in turn, produced Mi Reina (by St. Wolf), a stakes winner in Uruguay.
Rosa, the dam of Friolera and her siblings, was imported to Argentina in utero. She was by the good late 19th-century sire Wisdom out of the Blair Athol mare Tears, who arrived in Argentina in 1882. Tears, in turn, was produced from Niobe, a daughter of Loup-Garou.

Fun facts
- “Ajo” is the Spanish word for the English “garlic.”
- Ajo was the third Gran Premio Nacional winner to be sired by a similar winner. The first was Américo (1903), sired by Stiletto (1887), and the second was Melgarejo (1906), sired by Amianto (1891).
