Copyright was far removed from his sire Tracery in ability; in fact, it would be something of a stretch to describe him as being even a second-rate horse in his native England. Nonetheless, with a good pedigree and the equivalent of a Group stakes win under his belt, he was the kind of horse attractive to foreign buyers trying to build up their own stock. Installed as a stallion at Argentina's Haras El Pelado, he well repaid owner Jorge Atucha for the cost of buying and importing him as he was a two-time champion sire in his adoptive country. Even more importantly, he sired one of the greatest South American stallions of all time, Congreve.

He is also a half brother to juvenile stakes winner Tricky Aunt (by Son-in-Law), dam of the good English juvenile and important Australian sire Dhoti (by Dastur), and to Ratify (by Swynford), second dam of 1930 Laurel Stakes winner Conclave and third dam of 1942 American champion 2-year-old filly Askmenow.
Rectify, the dam of Copyright, is an unraced half sister to Ascot Stakes winner Turbine (by Speed) and to Facility (by Your Majesty), third dam of 1951 Ascot Gold Cup winner Pan II.
