A winner of three of 19 races at 2, Cream had not won at 3 prior to the Kentucky Oaks. She was considered a lucky winner of that race as Floral Park was leading but swerved sharply into deeper going in the final strides. Cream took advantage of the break to nail Floral Park by a nose. Adding to the impression that Cream's win was a fluke, favored Gowell (a multiple stakes winner and third in the Kentucky Derby) appeared stiff and sore in the post parade and suffered repeated interference during the race. Cream scored no other major victories and was not particularly successful as a broodmare.

Kingcup, in turn, was sired by 1870 Derby Stakes winner Kingcraft (by King Tom) out of Nutbeam, by 1858 Two Thousand Guineas winner Lord of the Isles.
