At the beginning of 1990, everyone expected that either Sunday Silence or Easy Goer would be the American champion older male and Horse of the Year at the end of the season. Instead, both the titans left the racetrack due to injury by midway through the racing season, and the year-end honors went to a horse that had not even earned black type until he was 5. Whether Criminal Type was actually the best all-around racehorse of 1990 is open to question: while he defeated both Sunday Silence and Easy Goer on the track, he had the weights in his favor, as he did in all four of his encounters with Ruhlmann (which the pair split two and two). Nonetheless, he was the most consistent older male campaigning in 1990 and was rewarded accordingly. Unfortunately, he proved a stud failure.

Assessments
Rated at 127 pounds on the Daily Racing Form's Free Handicap for American older males of 1990, 1 pound below co-highweights Easy Goer and Sunday Silence.
As an individual
A powerful, masculine chestnut horse, Criminal Type was game and determined while racing. He was much better on dirt than on turf. He was retired after injuring an ankle in his final start, the 1990 Woodward Stakes. He reportedly developed a nasty temperament while at stud.
As a stallion
According to records kept by The Jockey Club, Criminal Type sired 203 winners (43.4%) and six stakes winners (1.3%) from 468 named foals. His best runners were Grade 2 winner Hoolie and Grade 3 winner Madame Adolphe.
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Criminal Type was bred and owned by Calumet Farm, which raced the horse in partnership with J. Arnemann. He was trained in France by Patrick Biancone and in the USA by D. Wayne Lukas. After standing at Calumet Farm in 1991 and at Lane's End Farm in 1992, he was exported to Japan in late 1992. He died of a ruptured stomach on March 9, 2005, shortly before he was to have been sent back to the United States and pensioned at the Old Friends retirement facility.
Pedigree notes
Criminal Type is outcrossed through five generations. He is a half brother to 1986 American champion turf female Estrapade (by Vaguely Noble). The dam of listed stakes winner Rice (by Blushing John), Estrapade is the third dam of Peruvian Group 2 winner Calypso and the fourth dam of 2016 FrontRunner Stakes (USA-G1) winner Gormley. Criminal Type is also a half brother to 1980 Premio Emilio Turati (ITY-G1) winner Isopach (by Reviewer).
Criminal Type is out of 1974 Bed o' Roses Handicap (USA-G2) winner Klepto, a cleverly named daughter of No Robbery and the winning Beau Gar mare Blue Blur. Blue Blur is also the dam of Blue Fences (by Third Martini), dam of 1981 Gallant Fox Handicap (USA-G2) winner Alla Breva (by Stop the Music).
Blue Blur's dam Blue Grouse (by 1939 Italian champion 3-year-old male Vezzano) did not produce any black-type runners but had 11 winners from 11 foals. She, in turn, is out of L'oiseau Bleu (by 1934 Dewhurst Stakes winner Hairan), a winning half sister to 1944 American Horse of the Year Twilight Tear (by Bull Lea) and to stakes winners Sun Lady (by Sun Teddy) and Perfection (by Bull Lea).
