Something of a hard-luck horse, Cyane fractured a foot while winning the 1961 Futurity Stakes, an injury that sent him to the sidelines for the rest of the year and knocked him out of any hope of championship contention in a very good year for American juveniles. He came back the following year to win the Dwyer Handicap before embarking on a fine stud career.
